Background

The University of Medicine and Health Sciences (UMHS) is committed to educating uniquely skilled and diverse medical professionals eager to meet the need for physicians in various settings throughout the United States and the world. With a focus on quality patient care and utilizing the latest in advanced technological instruction and personalized education, the institutional aim is to produce genuinely passionate physicians highly prepared for practice in a changing medical landscape.

UMHS, founded in 2008, is a fully accredited Caribbean medical school developed for students that deserve and demand a quality education in a small school environment. Faculty are highly credentialed and recruited primarily from the United States and Canada.

UMHS has multiple accreditations and approvals allowing its graduates to gain residency and practice medicine in the US and Canada. One important accreditation is ACCM (Accreditation Commission on Colleges of Medicine).  This is an international accrediting body that has adopted US standards of accreditation and is recognized by both the National Committee on Foreign Medical Education and Accreditation (NCFMEA) and the U.S. Department of Education.

The MD program consists of a ten semester program which is completed in both the Caribbean and the US. The Basic Science Program is located at the UMHS’ state of the art campus on the beautiful Caribbean island of St. Kitts. The founders invested more than $50 million dollars to develop one of the most modern medical campuses in the Caribbean, comparable with that of most U.S. medical school campuses.  The clinical science program consists of one semester of study at UMHS’ preclinical campus in Portland, Maine, followed by five semesters of study at affiliated teaching hospitals in the United States, Puerto Rico, and Canada.

After earning their MD degree, students qualify for residency and licensure throughout the United States and Canada. UMHS students have been extremely successful at attaining residencies in numerous specialties and at competitive teaching hospitals.
