Dean, College of Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies

Sacramento, CA

California State University, Sacramento (Sacramento State), is seeking an experienced, skilled and visionary leader to join the campus community as its dean for the College of Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies.

As California’s capital university, Sacramento State transforms lives by preparing students for leadership, service and success. Sacramento State is located on a beautiful 300-acre, tree-lined campus adjacent to the American River, about five miles east of the State Capitol. Established in 1947, it is the seventh-largest of the 23 campuses in the California State University system. With faculty, students and staff working at the confluence of knowledge, passion, innovation and real-world learning, Sacramento State offers a truly transformative educational experience to its over 30,000 students—an experience enriched at every turn by the arts, culture, altruism, diversity, natural campus beauty and a community committed to educational excellence. As a top regional four-year comprehensive public university offering programs in business, education, engineering, health, the humanities, public policy and science, Sacramento State is the place to “Redefine the Possible,” the university’s tagline. Sacramento State alumni—one out of every 22 area residents—make up the heart of the region’s workforce and some of its finest leaders who are driven to make a difference in their communities.

The College of Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies is one of eight colleges within the university. The college has approximately 226 faculty, 5,253 students and 40 staff. The college offers bachelor’s degrees in anthropology, Asian studies, economics, environmental studies, ethnic studies, family and consumer sciences, gerontology, liberal studies, psychology, social science, sociology and women’s studies, as well as master’s degrees in anthropology, economics, political science, international affairs, psychology, public policy and administration and sociology. The college is also home to the Institute for Social Research, Archaeological Research Center and Archaeological Curation Facility and has a close affiliation with the Education Insights Center.

The dean reports directly to the provost and is part of the provost’s academic leadership team. The dean serves as the chief academic and administrative officer and spokesperson for the College of Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies. The primary responsibilities of the dean are to provide leadership and manage the departments, centers, programs and activities of the College. To this end, the dean safeguards the quality of academic programs and ensures academic excellence and student success. The dean also facilitates and supports faculty development and productivity in teaching, scholarly and creative activities, and their service to the institution and the community, in the context of shared governance. The dean is responsible for overseeing the School of Public Affairs Downtown and its academic programs.

Inquiries, nominations and applications are invited. Candidates should provide a CV, a letter of application that addresses the responsibilities and requirements described in the leadership profile and the names and contact information of five references.
