Middle Tennessee State University seeks applications for faculty positions for the 2018-2019 academic year.  MTSU, with approximately 22,000 students, is located about 35 miles southeast of Nashville. The University offers, through eight colleges, the College of Graduate Studies, and thirty-nine academic departments, baccalaureate instruction in the liberal and fine arts, the sciences, education, business, media and entertainment, and a variety of other fields. Graduate programs are offered at the master’s, specialist, and doctoral levels.

COLLEGE OF BASIC AND APPLIED SCIENCES

Basic and Applied Sciences is housed in our recently constructed 250,000 sf science building.  We have over 215 full-time faculty and approximately 5,212 students majoring in eleven departments. Aerospace – One Position. 114260.  Clinical Track (Non-Tenurable). Successful candidate expected to teach classes in professional pilot and/or maintenance management concentrations.  Terminal degree close to completion with expected completion no later than one year from hire date in Aerospace, Aviation, or closely related field considered.  Master’s degree in Aerospace, Aviation, or closely related field by appointment with 2 years directly related teaching or industry experience may stand in lieu of terminal degree.  Valid discipline-specific FAA certifications also required.

Agribusiness and Agriscience – Three Positions. (1) 102080. Agricultural Education. Doctorate in Agricultural Education or closely related field by appointment. Teach undergraduate courses in Agricultural Education and other agricultural courses in discipline; coordinating Agricultural Education Teacher Licensure Program expected.  (2) 109360. Animal Science.  Working knowledge of dairy production needed; expected to teach wide array of undergraduate courses in the animal sciences. PhD in Animal Science, Diary Science or closely related field(s). (3) 102040. Agribusiness/Agricultural Economics. Expected to secure external funding to create a nationally recognized research program; ability to excel in applied research; able to teach wide variety of undergraduate Agribusiness courses. Doctorate degree in Agribusiness or other listed field(s).

Biology – One Position. 103160. Ecological/Molecular Toxicologist. Freedom to develop research program (lab and/or field focused) that will gain national recognition; secure external funding; expected to mentor students and teach both undergraduate/graduate courses determined by candidates expertise. PhD in Ecology, or listed relevant field(s).

Computer Science – Three Positions. (1) 107460. Computational Sciences PhD. Interdisciplinary research interest should fit within the COMS PhD program; expected to teach undergraduate/graduate courses, create a productive research program and engage students (including undergraduate) in research. (2 and 3) 137070, 137100. Create a productive research program engaging students (including undergraduates) in research; expected to teach both undergraduate/graduate level courses.  PhD in Computer Science or closely related field required for all three positions.

Concrete and Construction Management – Two Positions. (1) 105070.  Classroom teaching of undergraduate students.  Terminal degree in Construction Management, or other listed fields. Candidates close to degree completion with expected completion no later than one year from hire date considered. (2) 105200. Clinical Track (Non-Tenurable). Ability to teach a variety of construction related courses, able to assist with residential, commercial and/or concrete construction service projects and student clubs.  Terminal degree close to completion in Construction Management, or other listed fields with expected completion no later than one year from hire date considered. Master’s degree in Construction Management or listed fields with 5 years relevant experience and significant involvement within the industry may stand in lieu of terminal degree. 

Geosciences – One Position. 125020. Geomorphology. PhD in Geosciences or closely related field. Expected to teach undergraduate/graduate courses in geomorphology, computational geoscience methods, earth science and related disciplines. Expected to undertake collaborative and multi-disciplinary research.

Mathematical Sciences – Two Positions. (1) 107005. Department Chair. Associate or Professor with tenure upon appointment possible.  Provide strong academic leadership, budgetary coordination, faculty/staff hiring and evaluations; facilitate planning and assessment, community advancement, fundraising, and acquisition/implementation of external grants; teach and mentor students. PhD in Mathematics, Mathematics Education or closely related field required. (2) 107270. Actuarial Science. Teach courses in support of the undergraduate/graduate programs; sponsor student research; assist Director of Actuarial Sciences in program/curricula development.  PhD in Actuarial Science, or listed related field(s).

Tennessee STEM Education Center – One Position. 367030. Director.  Twelve month position at open rank with tenure upon appointment in appropriate department possible. A national reputation in STEM education to direct the center and lead efforts to improve STEM education by encouraging and assisting STEM faculty with development/implementation of grant proposals; teaching/working with students; direct research and outreach efforts.  Doctorate in STEM discipline required with experience in STEM research program education.

Mathematics and Science Education – One Position. 107490. MSE PhD Director. Associate or Professor with tenure upon appointment possible. A national reputation of scholarship needed to grow the interdisciplinary PhD program; collaborate with diverse community; ability to articulate clear vision for growth of the program.  Doctorate in listed fields required with a record of funded education research in STEM-related field and experience mentoring PhD students.

College of behavioral and Health scienceS

Criminal Justice Administration – One Position. 121005. Department Chair. Associate or Professor with tenure upon appointment possible.  PhD in Criminal Justice or closely related field with criminal justice as an emphasis. Expected to provide strong academic leadership and representation within the university and broader community; manage resources and staff; and facilitate planning and assessment. 

Health and Human Performance – One Position. 118170. Exercise Science. PhD in Exercise Science or closely related.  Expected to teach undergraduate/graduate courses and research methods.

Psychology – Three Positions. (1) 120110. Behavior Analysis EAB or ABA. PhD or PsyD in Behavior Analysis or other areas of psychology with at least 18 hours of graduate coursework in Behavioral Analysis. (2) 120230. Clinical ABA/Clinical Child. PhD or PsyD in Clinical Psychology. (3) 120300. Lifespan Development with Expertise in Adulthood and Aging/Adult Personality.  PhD in Psychology or other listed areas with at least 18 hours of Psychology.  All three positions will required the successful candidates to teach undergraduate/graduate courses, and provide thesis supervision.

Social Work – Two Positions. (1 and 2) 168090, 168120. Department offers both the BSW and the MSW degree.  Ability to teach two or more social work content areas.  PhD in Social Work or closely related field along with a masters in Social Work from a CSWE accredited program.

JENNINGS A. JONES COLLEGE of BUSINESS

Accounting – One Position. 129020. Jacobs Chair of Excellence. Associate or Professor with tenure upon appointment possible. Expected to be an accomplished leader in the accounting academic community who will attract national and international attention to the program through teaching, research, and service.  Doctorate in Accounting from AACSB accredited institution or master’s degree in Accounting, Business or closely related field along with exceptional professional experience in the practice of accounting.

Information Systems – Two Positions. (1) 111060. Assistant Professor to teach undergraduate and possibly graduate level information systems and analytics.  (2) 114080. Analytics. Assistant Professor to teach within area of information systems and analytics at the undergraduate and possibly graduate level.  Both positions require doctoral degree in Information Systems or closely related field from an AACSB accredited school.  ABD close to completion considered with expectation of completion no later than one year from hire date.

Economics and Finance – Three Positions (1) 113220. Weatherford Chair of Finance. Associate or Professor rank.  Expected to be an accomplished leader in the academic/professional community to engage in innovative teaching in specialized field of finance and create a strong national reputation for the program. Doctorate in Finance or closely related field from an AACSB accredited institution. (2 and 3) 113030, 113060. Expected to engage in high quality research and be effective classroom teachers at the undergraduate and graduate levels.  Candidates with PhD or DBA in Finance, Real Estate or closely related field will receive special consideration.  ABD in these areas by appointment date considered.  All three of the positions have a review date of October 20, 2017.

Management – One Position. 112030. Pam Wright Chair of Entrepreneurship. Associate or Professor with tenure upon appointment possible.  Expected to be an accomplished leader in the academic and/or professional community to provide leadership through teaching, research and scholarly activity. Doctorate in Management or Entrepreneurship or closely related field from an AACSB accredited institution.

Marketing – One Position. 111070. Expected to have teaching and research interest in marketing and market performance and be effective teaching undergraduate and graduate level.  May include serving as Director of the Office of Professional Selling.  Doctorate in Marketing or Business Administration with emphasis in marketing.

College of Education

EdD Program in Assessment, Learning, and School Improvement (ALSI) – One Position. (1)  116270.  Responsibilities include teaching courses in the College of Education ALSI Program and other courses as needed. Earned terminal degree in a field of study related to PreK-12 public education assessment, learning, and/or school improvement required.

Womack Educational Leadership – Three Positions. (1 & 2) 115100, 115190. Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate/graduate courses, supervision of student teachers; and supervision of Residency I/II students. Doctorate in Educational Administration, Educational Leadership or Curriculum and Instruction or closely related.  (3) 115160. Library Science. Must possess experience using technology effectively in online instruction as this position provides completely online instruction; must be a Tennessee resident by appointment date. Expected to advise students; supervise field experiences; complete assessments; and assist in accreditation groundwork.  ALA-accredited master’s degree in Library Science.    

Elementary and Special Education – Three Positions. (1) 116240. Literacy. Successful candidate will teach undergraduate reading methods courses and courses in the Masters of Education in Literacy program; curriculum development; supervision of students in field-based placements; and faculty collaboration. Doctorate in Literacy and others as listed.  (2) 116260. Elementary Education.  Primary responsibilities include undergraduate instruction in elementary teacher education; curriculum development; supervision of students in field-based placement; and faculty collaboration. Doctorate in Elementary Education or closely related field. (3) 119030. Early Childhood Education. Instruction in the Early Childhood Education undergraduate program; curriculum development, and student supervision in field-based placement.  Doctorate in Early Childhood Education or closely related field.  All of these positions may include assignments outside normal business hours. Some courses meet off campus and may require travel (reimbursable per MTSU Travel Policies).

COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS

Communication Studies and Organizational Communication - Three Positions. (1 and 2) 130098, 130099. Organizational Communication. Primary expertise in Organizational Communication and other undergraduate courses with an interest in online teaching.  Terminal degree in Communication or closely related field.  (3) 130097.  Communication Studies. Primary expertise in Health Communication with secondary area of interest as Organizational or Interpersonal Communication to teach undergraduate courses. Terminal degree in Communication or closely related field. 

English – One Position. 123005. Department Chair. Associate or Professor with tenure upon appointment possible.  Demonstrated leadership experience to lead a large department; provide strong academic leadership, representing the Department within the University and broader communities; manage resources and staff; facilitate planning and assessment; teach and mentor students.  PhD in English or closely related field.

Global Studies and Human Geography – One Position. 818005. Department Chair. Associate or Professor with tenure upon appointment possible. Demonstrated leadership experience, with a record of excellence in scholarship and teaching to provide strong academic leadership; demonstrated experience with faculty mentoring, international education, and interdisciplinary initiatives; broad view and appreciation of the field of geography (i.e. human, physical, GIS); and/or regional specialization in the Middle East, Africa, and/or the Pacific Rim.  PhD in Global Studies or closely related social science discipline.

History – Two Positions. (1) 126530. African-American History. Pre-1900 and history of slavery expertise, the successful candidate will teach American History surveys, undergraduate/graduate courses; have an active research agenda with an opportunity to contribute to our new program in Africana Studies.  PhD in History or closely related field. (2) 401085. 19th Century US. Specialization in Civil War era, the successful candidate will teach American History surveys, undergraduate/graduate courses in area of specialization.  PhD in History or closely related field.

Philosophy and Religious Studies – One Position. 127100. Religious Studies. Join our new and growing BA/BS in Religious Studies program as a teacher-scholar with pedagogical competency in theory and method showing evidence of excellence in undergraduate teaching; ability to contribute to curricular development and readiness to engage in program support.  PhD in Religious Studies or other as listed.

Political Science and International Relations – One Position. 128050.  Specialization in Public Law/American Government and expected to teach introductory and upper level classes; contribute to our mock trial, moot court, and mediation program.  PhD in Political Science.

Sociology and Anthropology – One Position. 129220. Sociologist.  Expected to teach courses in candidate’s area of expertise at undergraduate/graduate levels; areas of substantive interests are open.  PhD in Sociology.  Special consideration given for expertise and teaching interest in medical sociology, research methods, and/or social justice.

College of MEDIA AND ENTERTAINMENT

Video & Film Production.  Successful candidates will teach video and film single-camera and multi-camera production courses and related topics to undergraduate students. Photography. Expected knowledge of the practice, history and theory and photographic pedagogy; teach digital and traditional photography courses and related topics to undergraduate students. Journalism – Four Positions. (1 and 2) 143060, 143160. Multiplatform.  Seeking new colleagues to assist students in learning to use video, audio and photos to tell powerful and compelling stories across multiple platforms.  Terminal degree in Journalism/Communication or closely related field.  Master’s degree in closely related field with five years of experience in professional media, journalism or communication may stand in lieu of terminal degree. (3 and 4) 143140, 143290. Public Relations, Strategic Communication and Advertising. Successful candidate will teach courses in various music business areas while demonstrating ability to work as part of a team to accomplish group goals. UNIVERSITY COLLEGE

Successful candidate will teach lower level college mathematics courses; must have the capacity to work with students with varying abilities; availability to teach night classes as needed.  Doctorate in Mathematics or Education with master’s degree in Mathematics (or closely related field with at least 18 graduate hours of Mathematics) expected.  (2) 136180. Reading. Expected to teach reading sections; perform assessment of learning; and curriculum development. Doctoral degree in Reading or Literacy Studies or closely related field with at least 18 graduate hours in Reading from accredited institution.  (3) 136240.  Bachelor of Integrated Studies (BSIS). JAMES E. WALKER LIBRARY

Walker Library is the main library for Middle Tennessee State University. The Walker Library service and collection priorities are digital scholarship, discovery and assessment.  The library is a vibrant hub for student learning and research in a modern, technology rich environment.

Collection Development and Management - Three Positions. (1) 401520. Department Chair. Associate or Professor with tenure upon appointment possible. Direct the development of goals, procedures and policy for Acquisitions, Continuing Resources and Cataloging. Work collaboratively with library leadership to contribute to strategic planning, collection development and management of collection budget and personnel.  ALA accredited master’s degree. Minimum of five years relevant experience in academic/research library. (2) 401070. Systems Librarian. Successful candidate will work closely with library units using the integrated library system; assist in optimizing system functionality through system configuration, scripting and API implementation.  ALA accredited master’s degree in Library or Information Science.  (3) 401130. Music and Media Cataloging Librarian. Member of the cataloging unit and responsible for providing bibliographic access to music and media formats.  Other formats are included as part of the overall cataloging responsibilities.  Must have an ALA accredited master’s degree in Library or Information Science with a Bachelor’s degree in Music (or substantial undergraduate/graduate coursework in Music). Minimum one year, post-MLS experience cataloging music and media formats in academic library or other relevant environment.

User Services - One Position. 401080. Reference/Instruction Librarian. Expected to provide research assistance to users; develop and lead general and subject specific library instruction courses to undergraduate/graduate students; ability to work selected mornings, evenings, and/or weekends with demonstrated commitment to reference and user-centered services.  ALA accredited master’s degree with one year demonstrated experience with instruction to undergraduate/graduate students.

MIDDLE TENNESSEE STATE UNIVERSITY DISSERTATION FELLOWSHIPS

Four Positions. 101120, 104280, 112160, 121140 The MTSU Dissertation Fellowship Program enhances institutional diversity in research, teaching, and service by recruiting underrepresented minority graduate students who are completing their dissertations. Hosted by a department in their discipline, fellows teach one course each semester in a subject related to their research and devote significant time to completing the dissertation. Successful candidates receive temporary faculty appointments (August 1 – July 31) and are eligible for benefits, including health insurance. These appointments are not on the tenure track. Salary is $30,000 plus support for research, professional travel, and other related expenses. Fellows must be eligible for employment.  Must be at the writing stage of doctoral program in a field taught at MTSU.
