Position Announcement

The Department of English at Dixie State University (DSU) in St. George, Utah, invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor with a specialization in Composition to begin July 1, 2018. The English department works with all students at DSU in developmental & general education requirements as well as offers a Bachelor's of Arts with four emphases in Creative Writing, English Education, Literary Studies, and Professional & Technical Writing and minors in Creative Writing, English Education, General Education, and Professional & Technical Writing. Responsibilities

  • Teach 24 semester hours in developmental English, English composition, and other English courses as needed, hold regular office hours, and regularly teach in the University's General Education curriculum
  • Teach upper division courses such as History and Structure of the English Language, Digital Journal Production, or other classes that fit into the candidate's specialty, as needed by the department
  • Assist in curriculum creation in composition
  • Serve on departmental, college, and university committees as assigned and attend departmental, college, and university meetings as required
  • Work with the department chair, the dean, and other faculty to advance the university's mission, including:
  • Conducting student assessment
  • Mentoring adjuncts
  • Performing service for the college and university
  • Participate in university and departmental student recruitment and retention initiatives
  • Facilitate service learning and engagement with the community
  • Qualifications

    • PhD in English, Rhetoric, or related field by August 2018 from a regionally accredited institution required
    • Additional background in rhetoric and composition, developmental English, the history and structure of the English language, or digital humanities necessary
    • Experience teaching and developing college-level writing curriculum in a variety of forms, such as first-year composition, developmental writing, and new media writing, required (finalists will be required to demonstrate competence via a teaching demonstration)
    • A background that complements existing faculty specialties
    • Ability to employ various communication and teaching technologies
    • Ability to communicate clearly with students, staff, and colleagues, both orally and in writing
    • An eagerness to engage with faculty, staff, and administrators to develop ways to improve the educational experience of students
    • Potential for excellence in teaching, research, and service

    Supplemental Information

    Contract:  Full-time (9 month) tenure-track faculty position. Requirements of tenure-track may be reduced by one or two years based on the amount and quality of documented previous tenured experience (see DSU policy 641). Faculty service begins August 2018; salary and benefits begin July 1, 2018. Annual salary of $49,000+, depending on qualifications & experience; additional compensation available for summer/overload teaching. Excellent benefits package included.
