The University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) Justice Center is conducting a search for a Director.  The Justice Center was established by the Alaska legislature in 1975 to provide statewide justice-related education, research, and service. The Justice Center is an interdisciplinary unit within the College of Health that provides undergraduate and professional education; conducts research in the areas of crime, law, and justice; and provides service to government units, justice agencies, and community organizations throughout urban and rural Alaska to promote a safe, healthy, and just society. 

The Justice Center houses an organized research unit, academic programs in Justice and Legal Studies, the Alaska Justice Statistical Analysis Center, and the Alaska Justice Information Center.  As an organized research unit, the Justice Center conducts basic and applied research related to justice issues in both urban and rural areas of the state, disseminates the findings from that research widely and in diverse formats, and provides students with the opportunity to participate in research endeavors.  The Justice Center publishes the Alaska Justice Forum, a quarterly publication focusing on justice and legal issues in Alaska.  The Justice Center’s academic programs include a Bachelor of Arts in Justice, a Minor in Justice, Justice Honors, a Bachelor of Arts in Legal Studies, a Minor in Legal Studies, an Associate of Applied Science in Paralegal Studies, a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Paralegal Studies, a Certificate in Legal Nurse Consultant (LNC) Paralegal, and Pro Bono Service Honors.  All Legal Studies and Paralegal degrees and certificates are approved by the American Bar Association.  The Center has very strong research relationships with Alaska’s justice community and it is committed to community-based participatory research.  It works very closely with policymakers and practitioners to improve the administration of justice in Alaska.  For more information, see the Justice Center website: www.uaa.alaska.edu/justice.

QUALIFICATIONS:

A terminal degree is required (Ph.D. in appropriate discipline or J.D.).  All substantive specialties will be considered, but preference will be given to candidates with extensive activities and accomplishments in teaching, research, and service.  Applicants must demonstrate success obtaining externally funded projects.  Preference will be given to applicants with experience in research funded by federal grants (e.g., National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, or National Institute of Justice).  Applicants must be comfortable working in a cooperative, organized educational setting with faculty, staff, public officials, practitioners, and others to establish academic, research and service priorities.  Demonstrated leadership experience in an academic setting is preferred.  Preference will also be given to applicants with demonstrated ability to mentor junior faculty.  We especially encourage applications from candidates who reflect the increasing diversity present in our community and student body, and who will enhance and promote engagement with other cultures.  Preference will be given to applicants whose leadership, teaching, research, or service background demonstrates an interest and/or expertise in minority or ethnically diverse populations, or in multi-cultural issues.

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

This is an academic leadership position that includes 55% of effort allocated to administration, 10% to teaching, 30% to research, and 5% to service.  This position is expected to actively seek and receive extramural funding for major projects.  Workload reallocations will be granted for increased research obligations.  This position reports to the Dean of the College of Health and is responsible for the effective administration of all academic and administrative matters at the Justice Center including but not limited to organization, planning, personnel, budget, curriculum, instruction, students, research, space and equipment.  As a member of the University’s management team, the Director participates in setting direction and advocating for the Justice Center, promoting the college as an active participant in the area’s economic development and a principal contributor in the quality of life in the community. 

The Director is responsible for recruiting, mentoring, and supervising faculty and staff.  Together, they are expected to organize and teach undergraduate courses; participate in the provision of technical assistance to justice agencies; design and implement applied quantitative and/or qualitative research; work collaboratively to prepare grant and contract proposals; conduct research and provide professional services related to justice policy and administrative issues in both urban and remote rural locations in Alaska; serve as research team members for both proposal development and project implementation; supervise support staff in the performance of ancillary research functions; write and prepare timely reports and publications; and perform other university duties which may include curriculum and research development, service on University and public committees, student advising and professional governance processes. 

This position includes fallback rights to a tripartite tenured or tenure-track faculty position in Justice.
