FAU Harbor Branch, a FAU research excellence pillar for Ocean
and Environmental Science & Technology and the FAU Wilkes
Honors College (WHC), in Jupiter Florida, seek candidates for a
joint appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor
with a research background in, but not limited to, the
biogeochemistry of marine nutrient cycling, carbon transformations,
natural products, microbial interactions, biofilms, and a broad
interest in biological oceanography, marine ecology, marine
microbiology and microbiomes.
The candidate will have their primary office and research
laboratory at Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute (HBOI), located
in Fort Pierce Florida, with an additional office in the Wilkes
Honors College. The successful candidate will hold an academic
appointment in the Wilkes Honors College, and will teach two
undergraduate honors courses per year, as well as supervise
undergraduate honors theses. At HBOI, the candidate has the
opportunity to teach graduate courses and will be expected to
supervise graduate research.
We seek candidates who will enjoy, and by nature maintain, the
collaborative and interdisciplinary cultures established by the
scientists and engineers at HBOI and the liberal arts and sciences
faculty of the WHC. The successful candidate will foster innovation
and excellence across FAU, and with local, national, and
international partners, and develop new understanding and
strategies, technologies, or products that will lead to stewardship
and wise use of the oceans and coastal habitats. More information
about Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute and the institute's
strategic plan is located at http://fau.edu/hboi/pdf/StrategicPlan.pdf
As part of FAU's overall strategic plan "Race to Excellence,"
Florida Atlantic University has identified Ocean and Environmental
Science & Technology as an area of research strength. Research
under this umbrella is coordinated at HBOI and seeks close
collaboration with research programs on the Jupiter, Boca Raton,
Davie, Dania Beach, and Fort Lauderdale campuses.
This position includes a generous start up package and new lab and
office space.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate must possess an earned doctorate in
oceanography, biogeochemistry, microbiology, or a closely related
discipline at the time of application.
Applications are sought from individuals with excellent teaching
and research/publication records and demonstrated potential to lead
a strong, extramurally-funded research program. It is preferred
that applicants whose research includes stable isotope studies of
carbon-nutrient transformation and/or those that employ molecular
biology and "omics" approaches in their research. The successful
candidate should have a strong research network and be poised to
take advantage of collaborations with other academic and corporate
institutions.
A strong track record of exemplary teaching and mentoring is
preferred. At a minimum, the Wilkes Honors College expects the
successful candidate for this position to be familiar with, and
demonstrate commitment to, the national reform agenda for
undergraduate STEM education.
A strong publication record required.
Well-funded, active research program, commensurate with their level
of experience.
Skills in leadership and mentoring, and the ability to work
cooperatively with University and extramural partners on research
that addresses contemporary and emerging issues in ocean science as
it relates to climate change.
