Boston College School of Social Work (BCSSW) seeks two tenure-track faculty members at the rank of Assistant Professor to join its vibrant community of social work scholars and practitioners. BCSSW, as a leading school of social work in the nation, has been responding to the pressing social concerns of the Boston region and the world. The Latino Leadership Initiative, the Center for Social Innovation, Research in Social, Economic, and Environmental Equity (RISE3), and the Center on Aging & Work exemplify our unwavering commitment to social impact. The reach of our global practice curriculum through worldwide partnerships is significant. Our curriculum and initiatives in social work have earned us a place as a top ten school of social work. Our school enrolls 550 master’s and 40 doctoral students and we are steadfast in pursuit of rigorous scholarship, preparation of students for competent and compassionate practice, and promotion of social justice. The curriculum is sharply focused to meet the needs of a changing society, both domestically and internationally.
Position Description
Contemporary research shows that many of the inequities from the past, such as racial and ethnic disproportionalities in the juvenile justice and child welfare systems and racial and ethnic disparities in education and health outcomes, still remain today. Often the result of structural violence, racial, social, and environmental inequities are the root of early disadvantage in education, health, work, income, place of residence, and quality of life. And for many in our communities in the U.S. and around the world, early disadvantages persist throughout the life course. Segregation influences access and utilization of social services including mental health services for different race and ethnic groups. While there are several reasons for these seemingly enduring problems, empirical research on these issues and interventions is limited. Current research typically examines these issues from a single discipline, and we are seeking faculty interested in pursuing this important topic from a transdisciplinary perspective.
We are seeking scholars at the Assistant Professor rank who will further the school’s expertise in the following:
- Research and scholarship on the causes and consequences of structural violence and its disproportionate effects associated with race, income, gender, and “place” across the life course. Competitive applicants will be knowledgeable about the impact of these factors on quality of life experiences, such as health disparities, trauma and mental health, interpersonal violence, education, or employment.
- Research and scholarship about immigrant communities, families, or individuals around the world and in the U.S. BCSSW through its Latino Leadership Initiative (LLI) is giving attention to Latino communities. Competitive applicants will have knowledge about pathways to well-being (social, emotional, and economic) across the life course for Latino communities in the U.S. and/or abroad.
The Boston College School of Social Work seeks faculty candidates committed to an active interdisciplinary research agenda. Our faculty lead research, scholarship, and teaching related to children, youth, families, aging, global issues, mental health, health, and the environment. We seek scholars who are firmly rooted in understanding and addressing racial, social, and environmental inequalities, and associated outcomes. We welcome scholars who are bold, novel, and transdisciplinary in their approaches to these vexing problems that cross conceptual and disciplinary borders. We are particularly interested in faculty who can build knowledge that directly or indirectly influences clinical practice, policy, or both. An applicant’s teaching and research interests should focus on clinical or macro or both.
Qualifications
Candidates must possess a commitment to teaching, scholarly publications, and research, including a capacity for obtaining external funding. Preference will be given to candidates who hold an MSW and PhD in Social Work or related disciplines such as sociology, political science, psychology, public health, anthropology, economics, and education. Underrepresented minority candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
Application Instructions
Applicants who are interested in being part of a vibrant community of social work scholars should apply online via Interfolio. Applicants should provide a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a writing sample, and three confidential letters of recommendation or evaluation. Additional documents helpful in the evaluation of the candidate are welcome.

Application reviews will begin in September 2017. The first round of interviews will take place in October/November. Campus visits for final candidates usually take place in December/January, and the positions will begin in Fall 2018.
