The Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping & NOAA-UNH Joint Hydrographic Center at the University of New Hampshire are considering offering a Post-Doctoral fellowship to support research in the field of hydrographic data processing. Specific topics for research include fundamental bathymetric data processing algorithms and their efficient, distributed implementation; real-time quality control for hydrographic systems; bathymetric interpolation, deconfliction, and generalization; analysis of non-traditional data for hydrographic use; hydrographic data management and charting workflow; and real-time decision aids, hydrographic risk models and resurvey priority. Successful candidates would be expected to contribute to two or more of these tasks over the course of the position.

Responsibilities of the fellowship are to conduct research in the topics outlined above, and to publish the results of this research through the usual academic channels such as appropriate conferences and journals. Candidates may also be called upon to assist in delivery of graduate courses, and to support field work associated with the research. Extensive collaboration with other researchers at the Center and with NOAA sponsors is also expected.

Candidates would hold a recent doctoral degree in electrical or mechanical engineering, physics, applied mathematics or statistics, or a similar discipline, with specific experience in statistical data/signal/image processing, and ability in at least one compiled procedural language and one interpreted scripting language.

Additional experience with hydrographic data capture and/or processing; more extensive experience (e.g., three or more years) with object oriented languages (especially C++); use of scientific programming languages (such as MATLAB or R); experience with Bayesian or model-based statistical techniques; and familiarity with hydrographic data processing software, would be extra advantages.

Funded by a grant to CCOM/JHC from NOAA, the fellowship would be for a maximum of three years, and subject to availability of funds.
