The Division of the Social Sciences at the University of Chicago invites applications for  faculty positions in the Departments of Anthropology, Political Science, and Sociology. Successful candidates will be appointed as either an Assistant Professor, or as a Provost Fellow with an initial two-year appointment at the faculty rank of Instructor. This initial period is intended to serve in lieu of a postdoctoral appointment for the same period, during which Provost Fellows will teach one class per year. At the end of the initial term, Provost Fellows will ordinarily be promoted to Assistant Professor. A goal of the search is to increase the diversity of the faculty in the Division of Social Sciences, and we therefore welcome applicants who come from groups that are historically underrepresented in the disciplines noted above, such as black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, American Indian or Alaskan Native.

The Department of Anthropology seeks applications from scholars who focus on Native American/indigenous studies. Areas of specialization might include, but are not limited to, environmental and resource management studies, finance, gender and sexuality studies, globalization and indigenous-settler colonial relations, law and politics, and museum and visual studies.

The Department of Sociology seeks applications from all sociological areas of specialization; the Department has a particular interest in the areas of race and ethnicity, health disparities, and migration.

The Political Science Department seeks applications from scholars engaging issues of colonialism, empire, and their contemporary legacies around the world, especially from scholars of Comparative Politics, International Relations, and Comparative Racial Politics. Themes of particular interest include: the legacies of slavery; the politics of indentured servitude; the practices of colonial and/or imperial rule; forces migration; genocidal violence; interstate relations involving former colonies; and economic (inter)dependence in the global south.

Appointments may begin as early as July 1, 2018. Candidates are expected to have the PhD in hand, and no more than two years of postdoctoral experience by the time the appointment begins.
