Director of Research and Instructional Services and Librarian Associate Professor

Kennesaw State University is now accepting applications for a twelve-month, non-tenure track Director of Research and Instructional Services and Librarian Associate Professor faculty position in the Horace W. Sturgis Library.
Position Responsibilities:
Kennesaw State University Library System invites applications for the Director of Research and Instructional Services. Serving a multi-campus organization, the Director of Research and Instructional Services leads a growing Unit of nine people under the guidance of the Associate Dean. We seek a thoughtfully energetic and collegial leader who strongly believes in striving for excellence while building student-library engagement via educational and research opportunities. We seek an experienced patron-service minded leader who has extensive knowledge of library reference and instructional services. This leader must possess a demonstrated knowledge of best practices and current trends in the evolving role of librarians in all areas related to undergraduate research and instruction at a multimodal university. Through effective and efficient leadership, the incumbent supports, initiates, mentors, and guides innovation regarding the work of the Unit. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are necessary as the Director of Research and Instructional Services must coordinate the Unit’s activities with various library and campus Units. We seek a leader who embraces the Library’s organizational culture to provide continuous learning and professional development for all employees, work place innovation, assessment and data driven decision-making, excellence in library services and collections, support for student success, collegiality, and our desire to develop leadership skills among all employees. The home location for this position is the Kennesaw Campus; however, this individual will spend time at the Marietta Campus and other KSU sites as necessary.
Major Responsibilities:
Administration (80%)
- Collaborates with Library Administration and other Unit Directors in facilitating the work of the KSU Library System, while fostering a culture of excellence that supports student success and innovative library services. Champions the KSU Library System’s mission of supporting student success, progression, retention, and graduation through supporting student success, progression, retention, and graduation efforts through efficient, effective, and innovative library services.
- Provides vision and direction for the Unit through strategic planning and the coordination of all Research and Instructional Services operations in a timely and cost-effective fashion. Encourages and supports the Unit’s culture of assessment and data driven decision-making. Collaborates with the Assessment Librarian on relevant assessment projects. Collaborates with the Director of Collection Development on strengthening the collection. Collaborates with the Director of Access Services on providing excellence in patron services.
- Leads, prioritizes, establishes workloads / deadlines, and sets expectations for all activities of the Unit.
- Develops, recommends, reviews, creates, and communicates policies, processes and procedures with appropriate input and/or approval from KSU Library Administration, other Library Units, KSU Administrative Offices and other USG institutions as necessary.
- Inspires and provides mentoring of direct reports ensuring they have support needed to perform duties and develop professionally while fostering an environment that promotes exploration, innovation and implementation of new approaches. Models best practices related to scholarship and service to support staff success and longevity.
- Leads efforts to envision methods for building student engagement with library resources.
- Fosters an environment that promotes exploration and implementation of new approaches to reference, research, and instructional services. Ensures that Unit workloads are equitable and that individual staff priorities reflect overall unit goals. Ensures that all reference and instructional services are evenly managed between two campus locations.
- Monitors, assesses, adjusts, and communicates with other KSU Library Leaders concerning outsourced operations (such as the library’s 24/7 chat service and distance learning technologies).
Librarianship (10%)
- Provides research assistance and reference services to undergraduate students and other members of the KSU community.
- Teaches information literacy classes to undergraduate students, in accordance with KSU Library System Policies, as assigned.
- Serves as an undergraduate faculty liaison. Performs subject specific professional work including library instruction to undergraduate students, faculty outreach, and collection development.
- Takes responsibility for their own professional growth and continuously updates skills and knowledge of current best practices in academic librarianship for self and others in the organization
- Serves on Library, Campus, University System of Georgia, regional, and national professional committees.
- Maintains appropriate professional activities and contributes to the development of the library profession and/or subject-specific discipline through scholarship, presentations, and publications.
- Meets or exceeds all library faculty standards for librarianship, administration, service and scholarship related to annual reviews and promotion application.
Additional Responsibilities (10%)
- Works a flexible schedule including some nights and weekends including work at various KSU locations.
- Effectively and collaboratively facilitates the work or others.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Education, qualifications, and experience:
Required Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited program or foreign equivalent. Applicants with the training, ability, and/or experience equivalent to the minimum degree may be considered.
- Minimum five years of increasingly responsible professional experience in the area of research and instructional services and one year of progressive supervisory experience. OR A Minimum three years of increasingly responsible professional experience in the area of research and instructional services with two years of supervising other librarians and/or staff (note: supervising student employees does not meet this requirement).
- Experience providing reference services in a variety of formats to a diverse patron group.
- Experience providing higher education information literacy instruction in a variety of formats to a variety of students.
- Impeccable written and oral skills. Ability to communicate appropriately within, and outside of, the library.
- Demonstrated history of leadership on library projects, initiatives, and committees with experience working independently, collaboratively and in a team environment. A history of completing detailed-oriented tasks with time sensitive deadlines. Record of making sound professional decisions, project management experience and applying analytical skills.
- Collegial attitude and enthusiasm for innovation with creativity in problem solving.
- Demonstrated ability to work productively, independently and collaboratively. Ability to function effectively in a team environment. Ability to work effectively with multiple constituencies: students, instructional faculty, university staff, and librarian peers.
Desired Qualifications:
- Four or more years’ experience promoting and managing reference and instruction programs in a higher education context.
- Experience mentoring and training librarians.
- Experience in building student-library engagement and assessing that engagement, especially with regards to diverse populations. Experience in communicating library value to community stakeholders.
- Working knowledge of current and emerging professional library principles, methods, procedures, and best practices especially in relation to information literacy instruction, reference, first year student success, and upper division undergraduate student needs.
- Ability to work in an environment of ambiguity and change.
- Experience working with vendors such as those providing chat services.
