Director of Technical Services and Librarian Faculty
Horace W. Sturgis Library
Kennesaw State University is now accepting applications for a twelve-month, non-tenure track Director of Technical Services and Librarian Associate Professor faculty position in the Horace W. Sturgis Library.
Position Responsibilities:
Kennesaw State University Library System invites applications for the Director of Technical Services. Serving a multi-campus organization from a remote site, the Director of Technical Services leads a Unit of seven people under the guidance of the Associate Dean. We seek an experienced patron-service minded leader who has extensive knowledge of library technical services including best practices and latest trends in the evolving role of libraries. Through effective and efficient leadership, the incumbent will manage all operational activities of the Technical Services Unit including acquisitions, cataloging, discovery, metadata, serials, and physical processing. We seek a leader who embraces the Library’s organizational culture to provide continuous learning and professional development for all employees, work place innovation, assessment and data driven decision-making, excellence in library services and collections, support for student success, collegiality, and our desire to develop leadership skills among all employees. The home location for this position is the Kennesaw Campus; however, this individual will spend time at the Marietta Campus and other KSU sites as necessary.
Major Responsibilities:
Administration (80%)
- Collaborates with Library Administration and other Unit Directors in facilitating the work of the KSU Library System, while fostering a culture of excellence that supports student success and innovative library services.
- Provides vision and direction for the Unit through strategic planning and the coordination of all Technical Services operations ensuring that library materials are discoverable to users in a timely and cost effective fashion.
- Leads, prioritizes, establishes workloads/deadlines, and sets expectations for all activities of the Unit.
- Develops, recommends, reviews, creates, and communicates policies, processes and procedures with appropriate input and/or approval from KSU Library Administration, other Library Units, KSU Administrative Offices and other USG institutions as necessary.
- Inspires and provides mentoring of direct reports ensuring they have support needed to perform duties and develop professionally while fostering an environment that promotes exploration, innovation and implementation of new approaches.
Librarianship (10% )
- Serves as an undergraduate faculty liaison. Performs subject specific professional work including library instruction to undergraduate students, faculty outreach, and collection development.
- Provides research assistance and reference services to undergraduate students and other members of the KSU community.
- Maintains professional growth by broadening up-to-date knowledge of relevant, current, and best practices in academic librarianship for self and others.
- Serves on Library, Campus, University System of Georgia, regional, and national professional committees.
- Maintains appropriate professional activities and contributes to the development of the library profession and/or subject-specific discipline through scholarship, presentations, and publications.
Additional Responsibilities (10%)
- Works a flexible schedule including some nights and weekends including work at various KSU locations.
- Effectively and collaboratively facilitates the work of others.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Education, qualifications, and experience:
- Master’s degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited program or foreign equivalent. Applicants with the training, ability, and/or experience equivalent to the minimum degree may be considered.
- Minimum five years of increasingly responsible professional experience in the area of technical services OR A Minimum three years of increasingly responsible professional experience in the area of technical services with two years of supervising other librarians and/or staff.
- Impeccable written and oral skills. Ability to communicate appropriately within, and outside of, the library.
- Demonstrated history of leadership on library projects, initiatives, and committees with experience working independently, collaboratively and in a team environment.
- A history of completing detailed-oriented tasks with time sensitive deadlines.
- Collegial attitude and enthusiasm for innovation with creativity in problem solving.
Desired Qualifications
- Three or more years’ experience in an academic library working in a technical services related position.
- Experience supervising, mentoring, and training.
- Experience with the Ex Libris Alma system and GOBI.
- Experience working in a consortia environment with a shared ILS.
- Experience partnering with library vendors.
- Experience providing library instruction and reference services.
- Working knowledge of AACR2, MARC21 and non-MARC metadata schema, LCSH, RDA, FRBR, and OCLC software.
- Experience as a participant in Program for Cooperative Cataloging programs.
- Involvement with linked data and BIBFRAME initiatives.
- Record of making sound professional decisions, project and time management experience, workflow analysis and applying analytical skills.
