Baker University is seeking a senior administrator of exceptional vision and with exemplary leadership skills to support and guide the development of innovative undergraduate and graduate academic programs as the university’s next provost. The provost serves as the chief academic officer of the university and works collaboratively with the president, vice presidents, deans, faculty, and staff to further the academic mission of the institution and the success of its students. The provost also oversees Student Affairs, which includes student organizations, fraternities and sororities, housing, career services, diversity and inclusion, student health, and counseling.

Founded in 1858, Baker University is the first institution of higher education in Kansas and maintains its United Methodist heritage through its values: student learning and academic excellence; critical thinking, inquiry, and freedom of expression; integrating learning with faith and values; connections; inclusiveness; and service to the community. Baker University (BU) serves students at the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), School of Education (SOE), School of Nursing (SON), and School of Professional and Graduate Studies (SPGS). The CAS and undergraduate programs in education are housed on the residential campus, located in Baldwin City, Kansas (a 30-minute drive from the greater Kansas City metropolitan area). Programs serving the needs of adult learners pursuing associate, baccalaureate, and master’s degrees at SPGS as well as master’s and doctoral degrees (Ed.D.) at SOE are located on the campus in Overland Park, Kansas. SON, in collaboration with Stormont Vail Health offers the Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master of Science in Nursing and is located in Topeka, Kansas.

The provost oversees academic programs at all campuses as well as the deans of the CAS, SOE, SON, and SPGS; university minister; library director, faculty, and staff; registrar and staff, and Student Affairs dean and staff. The provost reports directly to the president of Baker University. The provost works collaboratively with the president and members of the president’s Executive Cabinet which include vice presidents for enrollment and marketing, finance, strategic planning and academic resources/chief information officer, and the athletic director/senior advisor to the president for athletics. In partnership with academic leaders, faculty, and other administrators, the provost respectfully participates in shared governance to improve student success, retention, and graduation rates. The provost supports faculty excellence in teaching, creative and scholarly activity, and service.

Candidates should have a minimum of four years of proven success as an academic dean in a regionally accredited university and hold a terminal degree from an accredited college or university in a discipline within CAS, SOE, SON, or SPGS. A record of distinguished teaching, scholarly activity, and service is expected. Candidates should have experience with undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral education and have familiarity with adult and online education, as well as multiple campus operations. The provost will be expected to work effectively and collaboratively with the president, vice presidents, deans, faculty, staff, students, alumni, and members of the Board of Trustees in promoting, fostering, and articulating a vision for undergraduate and graduate education. The ideal candidate will demonstrate experience working with Student Affairs.
