HISTORY / THEORY OF ARCHITECTURE and ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO:

The School of Architecture, Planning & Preservation at the University of Maryland is pleased to announce a search for one tenure-track faculty position at the level of Assistant Professor. The individual selected for this position will provide innovative instruction and scholarship in the history and theory of architecture in support of the pre-professional and accredited professional degree programs in architecture. We seek individuals with focused intellectual approaches to history and theory grounded in buildings, cities, landscapes, and building practices, that integrate broader historical and cultural concepts. We embrace the concept that innovative thinkers seek to understand historical and theoretical subject matters in ways that go beyond the traditional framework of iconography, period, and patronage to include lenses that may engage, place, culture, or other themes. Candidates shall also demonstrate qualifications to teach and collaborate in architectural design studios and/or with other components of the curriculum. Candidates who have demonstrated a commitment to working with women and underrepresented minority students through teaching, mentoring, or administration are especially encouraged to apply.

Candidates shall minimally possess a PhD in the history and/or theory of architecture or a closely related field. ABD candidates are welcome to apply, but the PhD shall be completed prior to the start of the initial contract. Demonstration of potential for development of a national reputation in research, scholarship, creative, and/or professional activities in the history and theory of architecture is highly valued. The candidate shall be prepared to offer specific insight into how her or his research, as well as scholarly, creative, and/or professional activities contribute to the Architecture Program’s vision and mission.

Located just seven miles from the heart of the nation’s capital, the University of Maryland is the flagship campus of the state’s higher education system and a top-ranked public research institution. The University is a diverse community of 38,000 students, 9,000 faculty and staff, and 352,000 alumni. The School of Architecture, Planning & Preservation offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Architecture, as well as graduate programs in Community Planning, Historic Preservation, and Real Estate Development, several dual-degree masters programs, an interdisciplinary PhD program in Urban and Regional Planning and Design, and is home to the National Center for Smart Growth Research and Education and the Environmental Finance Center. The Architecture Program has a national reputation for design excellence in building craft, urban design, and sustainability as evidenced by the award-winning integrated design studio and advanced technology sequence; numerous honors in the arena of urban design; WaterShed, the first-place winner at the 2011 United States Department of Energy Solar Decathlon; and many other citations. Since the foundation of the School fifty years ago, history and theory of architecture has traditionally occupied a central place within the curriculum and intellectual life of the Program. It is envisaged that the successful candidate will provide leadership and direction in architectural history/theory as we proceed beyond our jubilee year.

Candidates for this position should be aware of the advantages of the University’s proximity to the wealth of resources in the Washington-Baltimore region. The National Archives maintains its research center on the College Park campus. The National Gallery of Art, the National Building Museum, and the Smithsonian Institution are but a few of the world-class museums that maintain facilities accessible to scholars. The University of Maryland has recently entered into a partnership with the world-renowned Phillips Collection—known as America’s first museum of modern art. Likewise, Baltimore offers additional institutions of interest to scholars in the area of art and architectural history including the Walters Museum and the Baltimore Museum of Fine Art. Finally, the architectural and urban traditions of the region stretch from colonial Annapolis, to master-planned Washington, D.C., to post-industrial Baltimore and include important works by masters such as L’Enfant, Latrobe, Mills, Bacon, Pope, Burnham, Farrand, Cret, and most recently, Adjaye.
