The College of Education at San Diego State
University is accepting applications and
nominations for a full-time tenured faculty
leadership position (Associate or Full Professor) in
Spanish/English Dual Language and English
Language Development. The College of
Education at SDSU is one of the nation’s premier
urban research universities and our graduate
programs currently rank as Number 1 in San Diego
County and the California University
System; Number 8 in California; and Number 57
nationally, according to U.S. News & World
Report. Candidates are expected to have
a documented record of scholarship, teaching, and
professional development partnerships in two
(Spanish/English) or more languages, the capacity
to provide academic leadership in the fields of
biliteracy and multicultural education. The
successful candidate will be responsible for
leadership across Dual Language and English
Learner Education (DLE) programs, including:
Bilingual Multiple and Single Subject
Credentials, Master of Arts, and Professional
Certificate programs. In addition, the candidate will
have an established record of scholarship, and
experience in increasing recruitment, retention and
graduation rates in similar teacher education
programs.
The successful candidate will demonstrate a
commitment to long term sustainability of the
preparation of dual language educators and programs
to elevate DLE's work, research, and
continued leadership in California and the nation.
The DLE department offers elementary and
secondary bilingual/bicultural teacher preparation
programs; graduate certificate programs; a
Master of Arts degree in education with a focus on
critical pedagogy; and the opportunity to
teach in the SDSU-Claremont Graduate School Joint
Doctoral Program in Education. DLE
faculty members are committed to issues of equity,
social justice and multilingualism for all
students and communities. DLE is seeking a faculty
member who can foster the knowledge,
dispositions, and skills aligned to DLE’s mission and
vision to support educators at all levels in
creating multicultural democratic practices and in
bringing multicultural voices to the center of
classroom discourse. The successful candidate will
support the professional development of
bilingual/binational teachers and contribute
leadership that develops K-12 Dual Language
Programs nationally.
Required Qualifications:
1. Earned doctorate and currently holding a tenured
Associate or Full professor ranked
position in education or related field;
2. Record of teaching, program coordination,
leadership, and/or professional development
including publications in English, Spanish or other
languages. Publications can include:
professional journals, policy briefs, and/or
curriculum development;
3. Leadership and/or program development with
community organizations or in public
school settings at the district, county, state,
national and/or international levels.
Leadership that specifically addresses the assets of
K-12 culturally and linguistically
diverse students and the teachers that work in these
settings. This can include evidence of
innovative grants, projects or institutes, and/or
research publications, policy briefs, along
with participation in state, national and/or
international professional educational
organizations;
4. An established record of scholarship and grant
writing in one or more areas: best
practices for biliteracy development and/or bilingual
teacher preparation, English
language development, cross-cultural, or
transfronterizo program development;
5. A record of scholarship, professional development
and achievement in biliteracy
education and/or bilingual/multicultural teaching
methods at the K-IHE level;
6. Spanish proficiency to teach, publish, advocate,
promote, and inform the development of
dual language education programs and research.
7. Evidence of affiliation and participation in state
and national educational professional
organizations.
Preferred Qualifications:
1. University teaching experience in research
methods, curriculum theory and development
or language policy courses; Spanish literacy methods,
English language development
and/or content specific to bilingual teacher
education, professional development
and related research.
2. Experience in leading and mentoring linguistically
and culturally diverse university
students, faculty, and public K-12 schools, students,
families and community leaders.
3. Demonstrated evidence of working for social
justice, educational equity and
multilingualism in public settings, specifically in
K-12 school communities at state,
national and/or international levels.
4. Evidence of strong methodological preparation in
any recognized area, such as critical
action research, critical ethnography, cultural
ethnography, phenomenology, narrative
inquiry and quantitative research designs.
5. Experienced in writing, directing, or
participating in externally funded projects.
Duties: Leadership in the
coordination of Bilingual Credential, Graduate and/or Certificate
programs.
Teach courses in the credential, graduate and/or
certificate programs including chairing and
participating on academic and related college
committees. Provide coordination and advising for
credential and/or graduate students as part of the
leadership focus. Continue innovative
development of research and external funding
opportunities through the Center for Equity and
Biliteracy Research at SDSU.
