Dean, College of Arts & Sciences
The University of Missouri-St. Louis is searching for an engaged
and dynamic Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences. We seek a
leader who understands the increasing complexities of higher
education, and who understands the imperative of diversity in all
levels of the university setting. Further, we desire a leader who
embraces the expanding opportunities and demands of serving our
community partners, the importance of helping instill optimism and
realism in our students, and realizes the necessity of being adept
and adaptable in this ever-changing environment. The University of
Missouri-St. Louis is the largest public research institution
located in Missouri’s most diverse, populous, and economically
vibrant region. The university has over 17,000 students consisting
of 8,070 on-campus undergraduate students, 3,091 graduate and
professional students and 5,853 advanced college credit students.
UMSL is a part of the University of Missouri land-grant system and
is classified as RU-H (high research activity) and as a Community
Engaged Campus by Carnegie rankings. The Dean of the College of
Arts & Sciences will work from this foundation to foster and
expand our campus engagement with core communities, faculty
research, teaching, and development, while facilitating student
success both in and outside the classroom. The College of Arts
& Sciences, one of six colleges at UMSL, is the largest and
most diverse, serves the largest number of students, and is the
academic center of the core curriculum and student advising and
tutoring services. The College consists of nineteen departments,
one school, 5 centers, the Marcus Allen Advising Center, and 165
tenured/tenure-track faculty, 107 non-tenure track
(teaching/research/clinical) faculty and 162 staff members. The
College offers 33 separate baccalaureate, 17 master, and 7 doctoral
degrees as well as 8 graduate certificates. Each semester the
College offers over 860 unique courses. Annual research
expenditures are around 8 million dollars.
Position: The Dean is a campus leader who helps
guide curricular innovation, community engagement, and strategic
mission and vision. As the chief academic and administrative
officer of the College of Arts & Sciences, the Dean reports
directly to the Provost/Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.
Academically, the Dean is responsible for the College’s hiring and
promotion decisions at all ranks, research productivity, and
curricular innovation. Administratively, the Dean oversees
strategic planning, budget management, fundraising, and community
engagement. The Dean provides vision and leadership to help guide
this vigorous College toward increased national and international
prominence and service to the St. Louis region and beyond. A

Qualifications: The College seeks an energetic
and innovative leader for advancing the College’s mission of
teaching, research, service, and economic development. We wish to
see evidence of collaborative, strategic, decision making that
forms and expands our student-centered mission and support for
research. The successful candidate must have a doctorate and a
distinguished record of teaching, scholarship, and academic
accomplishments appropriate for appointment as Full Professor in a
Department of the College.
Other qualifications include:
• Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills; and a willingness to promote collaboration
• Significant university administrative experience at the departmental level or higher with noteworthy experience in managing budgets, collaborating with diverse constituencies, increasing research and teaching innovation, and increasing student access and success; experience in developing strategic priorities
• Demonstrated expertise in developing diverse and inclusive learning and working environments
• Evidence of leadership in productive community partnerships that reflect an understanding of the role that metropolitan, land-grant universities and public education play in a democracy
• An enthusiasm for and proven track record of raising funds from a variety of sources, including private donors, foundations, and government agencies; outreach to alumni
