NRL has a long, proud history of conducting cutting edge research on basic electromagnetic phenomena of importance to radar and related sensors, investigating new engineering techniques and methods applicable to radar, inventing and demonstrating the feasibility of new radar concepts and systems, and performing related systems analysis and evaluation of radar systems. NRL’s Radar Division places emphasis on new and advanced concepts and technology in radar and related sensors. The Radar Division’s efforts in turn increases the Navy and Marine Corps' ability to fulfill their mission. The Radar Division has approximately 90 civilian employees with an annual budget of about $30M. As an expert authority in radar, the Superintendent:
- Conceives, plans and formulates research efforts in support of the military defense of the United States.
- Serves as a scientific and engineering consultant to the Department of the Navy, other departments of the Government, allied foreign governments and various other interested groups in matters which are under his/her purview.
- Serves on various policy and planning boards, and contributing to the overall improvement of the integrated research process.
- Plans, guides and encourages the Division research efforts, including oversight of personnel, facilities, finances, safety, security, priorities, assignments, morale, discipline, etc.
- Oversees all budgetary matters for the Division using the working capital fund model.
