The Department of Mathematics, San Francisco State University, invites applicants for a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor position in Mathematics beginning August 2018.

The Department seeks individuals with a background in Statistics and/or Biostatistics. Candidates with a track record of using numerical/computational methods in applied data science will be highly preferred.

The Department of Mathematics has 18 tenured and 5 tenure-track faculty members dedicated offering an outstanding environment for professional achievement and education. Three of the faculty members are trained in Statistics. The Department expects to inaugurate a Master of Science degree in Statistics in Fall 2018.

Qualifications: Candidates should have a Ph.D. in Statistics or Biostatistics, or a Ph.D. in    Mathematics or Applied Mathematics with a strong background in Statistics/Data Science.

Candidates must demonstrate the ability to teach advanced level and lower division courses in all areas of Statistics at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Preferred candidates should have experience teaching and /or mentoring students from underrepresented groups.

For the Assistant Professor rank, there must be strong evidence of professional accomplishment in Statistics or Biostatistics, together with either proven success in securing external funding or exceptional promise in doing so. Candidates for the Associate Professor rank must have an established record of research leadership in Statistics or Biostatistics and a track-record of continual success in securing external funding as PI.

For both ranks, demonstrated excellence in using numerical/computational methods in applied    data science is a plus. Other preferred characteristics are: track record of funded or highly fundable grant proposals; exemplary track record in teaching; evidence of inclusion of students in research; evidence of fruitful collaboration with researchers and practitioners in Statistics and related fields; ability to cultivate and maintain collegial working relationships; experience in multicultural settings.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate how they have or will incorporate inclusion, diversity, and educational equity in their courses and/or scholarship/creative works.

Responsibilities: The position requires graduate and undergraduate teaching in all areas of Statistics, mentoring and advising graduate and undergraduate students, supervising student research in areas related to Statistics or Biostatistics, developing an active and outstanding original research and scholarship program in areas of specialty, and ongoing committee and service assignments. Rank and salary: Assistant Professor and Associate Professor, both tenure track. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience, accomplishment, and research leadership potential/record. The California State University (CSU) provides generous health, retirement and other benefits.
