The Opportunity - Southern Utah University (SUU), part of the Utah System of Higher Education governed by the Utah State Board of Regents, seeks an expert in engaged learning, an academician experienced in high-impact learning practices, a scholar, and an experienced leader to serve as the next Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. As its mission, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences seeks to create everyday leaders. The College supports excellence in education through a diverse, dynamic, and personalized academic environment emphasizing engaged learning.

The faculty educates students to embody holistic knowledge, inspire critical thinking, possess dynamic oral and written communication skills, and become global citizens. Together, this education and training equips students to make positive changes in their communities.

The College offers undergraduate and graduate degrees, and consists of seven Departments: Communication; English; Languages and Philosophy; History, Sociology and Anthropology; Political Science and Criminal Justice; Psychology, and Undergraduate Legal Studies. Graduate programs include Master of Professional Communications and Master of Public Administration.

The highly engaged faculty teach and mentor students. Faculty members bring exceptional educational and experiential backgrounds to the classroom and are active scholars in their respective fields.

In Spring 2017, the College had 1,430 students enrolled, including 1,259 in undergraduate programs and 171 in graduate programs. Within the College, 58 percent of the students were female and 80 percent attended full time.

The College has three centers: the W. Edwards Deming Incubator for Public Affairs, the Writing Center, and the Grace A. Tanner Center for Human Values.

Essential to the College’s educational process is a sense of “community,” wherein collaboration, diversity, respect for all people, civility, and shared governance are cultivated. The College encourages the discussion and exploration of differing views while recognizing the importance of individual freedom to reach one’s own conclusions.

The College seeks a strong leader to broaden service, social, and cultural perspectives through campus and community involvement in internships, study abroad, service learning, undergraduate research and scholarship (UGRASP), and Honor’s programs. The College affirms active participation in extracurricular activities provides a holistic educational experience and helps prepare students to become responsible, caring members of society.

The Position - As the senior administrative officer of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Dean is responsible for all functions and matters relating to the College. The Dean reports to the Provost.

Responsibilities of the Dean include:

  • Represents, advocates for, and mediates for the faculty, students, and academic programs of the College.
  • Promotes diversity and effective interaction within a multicultural environment.
  • Cultivates a collegial, collaborative, diverse environment with faculty, students, staff, administrators, and the community.
  • Communicates clearly and effectively, orally and in writing, on all issues and processes among the academic departments of the school and the Provost’s office and other administrative offices.
  • Evidences a leadership style characterized by transparency and professional integrity that inspires cooperation, innovation, creativity, and respect among faculty, students, administrators, and staff.
  • Works to preclude, but if necessary, to facilitate resolution of, conflicts of all types across the College.
  • Participates in community outreach and represents the College and University in national, regional, and state organizations.
  • Represents the College in the Deans Council and in other governance venues of the University.
  • Supports and seeks funding for the teaching and pedagogical research of the faculty in the College.
  • Supports and seeks funding for the research and scholarly work of the faculty and students in the College.
  • Directs the performance of professional duties of faculty and staff in the College.
  • Participates in faculty evaluation decisions.
  • Works with the academic departments and cross-divisionally with the Student Affairs Division to set and meet goals for student enrollment, retention, and graduation.
  • Works with the academic departments and with the offices of Institutional Research and Assessment, Institutional Effectiveness and Planning, and the Provost to establish a seamless system of course-, program-, and College-level assessment, using discipline-appropriate student learning outcomes, and then to use the results of that assessment process for the improvement of programs in the College.
  • Works with academic departments and the Office of the Provost on developing and implementing strategic planning goals, objectives, and action plans.
  • Works with the academic departments and the Provost on developing new academic programs and revising existing academic programs.
  • Oversees the reviews of the academic programs in the College.
  • Works with the academic departments on accreditation and re-accreditation processes for accrediting agencies.
  • Is responsible for budgets and financial sustainability of the College.
  • Works with academic departments and the Graduate and Online School in offering graduate programs and activities on and off campus.
  • Assists the Office of University Advancement with donor cultivation and fundraising.
  • Works with faculty and the Office of Sponsored Programs, Agreements, Research and Contracts (SPARC) on developing grant proposals.
  • Works with the Office of the Provost and the Department of Information Technology on meeting the needs of faculty and students for technological resources for teaching and learning and for research and scholarship.
  • Promotes and facilitates interdisciplinary programming and collaboration within the College and across the academic divisions.

Qualifications & Characteristics - Candidates must have an earned doctorate in a discipline within the College, and a demonstrated record of excellence in leadership, management, teaching, scholarly accomplishment, and professional activity. A minimum of five-years of full-time teaching in higher education and three to five years of higher education management experience, preferably at the level of department chair or above, are required.

The ideal candidate will have sensitivity to an appreciation of faculty governance and evidence of commitment to faculty input in the decision-making process. A collaborative working style and the ability to work effectively with diverse constituencies also are required.

  • Experience with emerging technologies, including online instruction
