Communication - Assistant Professor (AA25359)

The Department of Communication at the University of Washington seeks a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor who focuses on social interaction.

We are looking to hire a scholar whose work focuses on the particulars of social interaction. Candidates for this position take a humanistic/interpretive approach to studying communication in social and personal relationships. More specifically, their work engages the study of language, discourse, nonverbal behavior, and/or identity in social and cultural contexts. They ask questions with answers that are grounded in particular people, places, or phenomena and so are oriented more qualitatively in at least some of their work. Particular approaches are ethnography of communication, discourse analysis, or grounded theory, among others, and candidates should be prepared to teach one or more qualitative methods that reflect their scholarship. They should also have a commitment to student mentorship and evidence supporting this commitment. Particular contexts of interest should complement our existing faculty and center on areas such as Communication and Difference, Group/Intergroup Communication, Communication in Families, Online Communication, Health Communication, and/or Interpersonal Communication.

The start date for this position is September 16, 2018. Applicants should have a Ph.D., or foreign equivalent, in Communication or a related field by the start of the appointment. University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research, and service. Candidates are expected to conduct research, teach four courses during a three-quarter academic year, engage in service, and supervise graduate students at the Master and Doctoral levels. The position entails teaching in the Department¹s undergraduate and graduate programs.
