Position:  Full-time tenure track position. Duties include teaching courses in the Park, Recreation and Tourism Studies (PRTS) program, developing and maintaining a nationally visible research program, and providing service to the university, college, department, profession and community.  

 

Qualifications: The successful applicant is expected to have an earned doctoral degree in recreation, tourism, parks, leisure or related field; a strong commitment to scholarship and research; and the ability to employ effective teaching practices. Candidates must be able to teach in the PRTS professional core and in the Park and Recreation Management (PRM) and Tourism Management (TM) concentration areas. The applicant must be able to supervise graduate (MS and PhD) student research and serve on committees. Candidates at the Assistant level must show potential to develop and maintain a nationally visible research program, including grant submission that is consistent with the research mission of the Department of Human Movement Sciences. Candidates at the Associate level must demonstrate substantial research accomplishments of peer-reviewed publications, a consistent record of peer-reviewed funding as a PI, current active competitive grants, and a strong and successful graduate and undergraduate teaching and mentoring record. Preferred qualifications include experience as a practitioner in the field of park, recreation and tourism management; ability to work collaboratively with community partners; and a commitment to honoring diversity in their teaching, research and service.

 

Related Information:  The Park, Recreation and Tourism Studies program’s undergraduate curriculum is accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Parks, Recreation, Tourism and Related Professions (COAPRT).  The PRTS undergraduate program currently has three emphasis areas: park and recreation management, tourism management, and therapeutic recreation. 

 

The Department and College: The Department of Human Movement Sciences (http://www.odu.edu/hms) is one of six departments in the Darden College of Education (http://www.odu.edu/education) and offers baccalaureate and master’s degree programs in Exercise Science; Health and Physical Education; Park, Recreation and Tourism Studies; and Sport Management. The PhD in Education, concentration in Human Movement Science, includes emphasis areas in Applied Kinesiology, Sport and Recreation Management, and Health and Sport Pedagogy.  HMS currently has 21 full-time faculty; an administrative support employee; 18 department-funded graduate assistants; over 1400 undergraduate majors; and approximately 80 graduate majors. The department is housed in the Student Recreation Center, which includes state-of-the-art instructional and research facilities including a designated PRTS activities lab.
