Summary:
The Police Department at Utah Valley University is seeking applicants for the Police Sergeant. In this role, the Police Sergeant will provide direction and support to police operations in the areas of traffic, patrol, protection of life and property, criminal investigations, security services and special programs. This position is responsible for the instruction and the first-line supervision of police personnel and provides effective police service to the University community. This position frequently performs the same duties as police officers.

• Supervises the activities of subordinate police personnel. Plans, coordinates, and evaluates the operation and goals of police assignments. Carries out human resource activities by evaluating employee performance, initiating disciplinary action, and making commendation recommendations. Exercises direct command in a manner that assures order, appropriate conduct, discipline, and efficiency. Ensures compliance with departmental standards.
• Schedules and organizes the work of subordinate personnel. Disseminates criminal and administrative information to subordinate personnel. Reviews and analyzes reports prepared and submitted by officers for accuracy, completeness, and essential elements. Maintains positive community relations and department image.

Required Qualifications:
High School Diploma and six months related experience or equivalent and certification as a Category 1 Peace Officer and three years police experience.
Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.
Must obtain BCI Basic TAC certification within six months of hire and maintain certification during employment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Knowledge of Utah Code, local laws, and ordinances.
• Knowledge of investigative tactics, information sources, and productive line of inquiry.
• Skills in the use of firearms.
• Interpersonal, problem-solving, and decision-making skills are expected to be made independently
• Effective supervisory and management skills.
• Ability to the operation of a motor vehicle at high speed, in pursuit situations, and in adverse conditions while maintaining a safe operation.
• Able to communicate effectively with a diverse group of individuals.
• Must maintain control when others may not be in control.
• Ability to handle high stress, highly volatile situations.
• Must be able to stand for long periods of time.
• Must be able to run and walk around campus to protect all personnel and property.

Preferred Qualifications:


Physical Requirements:
Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.

FLSA: Non-Exempt

Pay Range: $41,102 to $51,502
