The Pennsylvania State University (www.psu.edu) seeks a highly motivated leader with exceptional strategic, technical, and influence skills and broad expertise to join the leadership team of the university’s enterprise information technology function as Chief Technology Architect. Reporting to the University’s Vice President for IT & Chief Information Officer, the Architect will be a key member of the CIO’s senior leadership group and will be expected to envision and implement a best-in-class technology infrastructure that advances the institution’s missions in teaching, research, and service.

The Chief Technology Architect brings broad technical and operational expertise to play a transformative role influencing and supporting the full range of technology initiatives at Penn State University. With particular focus on opportunities to enhance the design and efficiency of the University’s technology infrastructure across its 24-campus system, the position will champion affordable innovation across multiple technology focus areas and will provide a new level of leadership on financial sustainability and return on investment. This is the first enterprise level architect position for Penn State IT. In its current, initial configuration, the Chief Technology Architect position is an individual contributor, though s/he will have assigned resources to develop initiatives, seed projects, and engage external resources as needed.

The Chief Technology Architect will hold a highly visible leadership role that will touch all facets of the University. The ideal candidate has a proven track record of leading successful technology initiatives as a creative thinker, problem solver, teacher, learner, and leader of people. An undergraduate degree from an accredited institution and at least 10 years of relevant professional experience are required, as is experience in a large, complex, distributed organization. Professional activity at the national level is expected, as are excellent communication, relationship, and presentation skills. Familiarity with the array of established and emerging vendors relevant to the technology infrastructure of a large university is also expected.

Penn State is one of the leading public research universities in the nation. It enrolls over 97,000 students in one university on 24 campuses and online, and boasts over 645,000 living alumni. Penn State conducts over $800 million per year in research, employs 44,000 people, and has an annual budget in excess of $4 billion.  The University generates approximately $8.5 billion in direct and indirect economic impact annually within Pennsylvania. In its sheer size, in its impact on Pennsylvania, in its place in the nation, in its transformative effect on student lives, in the power of its research and in its cumulative history, Penn State is formidable.
