General Position Summary: 

Reporting to the vice president of development and partnering with the development staff, as well as the greater foundation and college teams, this position will identify, cultivate, solicit and steward corporate and foundation entities regarding grants, sponsorships and gifts. This position will regularly collaborate with the college’s director of workforce development, who works with some of the same prospects.  

In addition, the development director will identify, cultivate, solicit and steward a portfolio of major gift-level partners to support identified priority programs and projects at Clark College. The level of a “major gift” may be adjusted depending upon the needs of the foundation and the college and will include planned-gift opportunities. The development director will be actively engaged in working to establish long-term associations and strengthen existing relationships that will result in funding for the immediate and long-term needs of Clark College and the foundation. 

The development director responds to assigned major gift leads as appropriate and stewards these gifts in cooperation with the foundation team members. The development director will coordinate her/his efforts with various advancement resources and staff as is appropriate, including the chief advancement officer, vice president of development, other development officers, and advancement services to create strategies to develop successful philanthropic relationships. 

In addition, the development director will perform other responsibilities that impact cultivation and stewardship of assigned major gift opportunities including: strategically creating, coordinating and attending special events for the college and in the community; working with alumni-related programs and activities; thanking donors; entering appropriate contact information into The Raiser’s Edge system to document interactions with donors and potential donors; working with Clark College administrative and academic leaders in support of development activities; reporting/monitoring her/his activities and productivity; and other related responsibilities as required.  

Cultivation and Solicitation of Corporate and Foundation Major Gifts – 60% 

  1. Work with the vice president of development and advancement services staff to develop strategic plans for identifying, cultivating and soliciting corporate and foundation entities capable of making philanthropic contributions at the defined major gift level and higher —  and then soliciting those identified potential partners. 
  2. Under the guidance and direction of the vice president of development and advancement services staff, create and maintain a schedule of contacts (as determined by the annual goal-setting process) with prospective and current corporate and foundation donors with strategic action plans attached to each individual and entity.
  3. Develop and write gift proposals, in coordination and consultation with appropriate foundation staff, at the discretion of the vice president of development.
  4. Engage with and help to manage other corporate and foundation grant proposal processes being developed and managed by designated college representatives, including the college’s grants’ office and the assistant vice president for strategic partnerships.
  5. Initiate opportunities for faculty, administrators and deans to interact with prospective and current corporate and foundation donors.
  6. Build successful relationships with college faculty and staff, and at the direction of the vice president of development, obtain information from college entities with the direct goal of matching their needs to the goals and direction of the most appropriate prospective and current donors.
  7. Ensure that cultivation, stewardship and reporting requirements are met to sustain successful relationships.
  8. Work with the advancement team to effectively document all contacts with prospective donors in the development director’s assigned portfolio, utilizing The Raiser’s Edge as the sole tool for planning and recording all strategic actions.
  9. Work with the annual giving and alumni relations leaders to identify and support appropriate activities that will advance the efforts of both programs.

    Skills/Requirements:

    • Outstanding interpersonal and communications skills, both verbal and written, including the ability to initiate dialogues with new/unknown individuals, speak or make presentations to small and large groups, convey complex major/planned gift concepts in simple language, draft persuasive communications and written materials, and adjust communication style to meet the diverse interpersonal preferences of others.
    • Outstanding organizational skills to manage multiple priorities and competing donor needs, including coordinating programs and projects that involve participation with multiple individuals.
    • Strong computer skills to draft documents via word processing, use the internet, enter donor information in a database, use online calendars, etc.
    • High attention to detail to meet the personalized needs and preferences of diverse donors and alumni.
    • Ability to make decisions within a shared decision-making environment and exercise sound judgment, including knowing when to act independently and when to seek guidance/input before taking action.
    • Flexibility to adapt to changing and sometimes conflicting priorities.
    • Ability to maintain professional demeanor and service orientation at all times even when participating in stressful situations. 

    Qualifications/Education and Experience: 

    • Bachelor’s degree required.
    • Four years of development and fundraising experience or comparable experience.
    • Demonstrated ability to cultivate and solicit prospects and donors.
    • Superior interpersonal skills with the ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with a variety of constituents.
    • Excellent writing skills to prepare proposals, reports, requests and correspondence.
    • Demonstrated analytical skills in strategic planning, budgeting and research.
    • Working knowledge of computers and applicable software programs.
