Eastern Washington University and the Department of Biology invite applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Biology Education to begin September 16, 2018.

This position will have several key responsibilities:

  1. Teach courses: Biology Teaching Methods, Science Teaching Methods, Science Teaching Capstone, and could include introductory biology and other biology courses.
  2. Manage the biology education programs and advise/mentor students in said programs.
  3. Develop and sustain an active research program that includes Science Education.
  4. Supervise Master's and undergraduate level research.
  5. Seek external funding to support scholarly activities and support students.
  6. Professionally engage with the local community.
  7. Participate in service activities to the department, college, and university.
  8. Engage in effective teaching and assessment of learning outcomes.

Goals for students within the BAE program include:

  • Create a community of diverse learners who construct meaning from their science experiences and possess a disposition for further exploration and learning
  • Organize a safe and effective learning environment
  • Interrelate and interpret important concepts, ideas and applications in the field of biology and conduct scientific investigations
  • Develop strategies for teaching that organic evolution is a unifying theme
  • Engage students both in studies of various methods of scientific inquiry and in active learning through scientific inquiry
  • Construct and use effective assessment strategies to determine the backgrounds and achievements of learners and facilitate their intellectual, social and personal development

Required Qualifications:
  1. Ph.D. in Biology Education, Biology or a related area. ABD candidates may be considered, but Ph.D. must be completed no later than the candidate's start date for the position.
  2. Demonstrated ability to teach science education courses. Ability may be demonstrated by prior successful teaching experience, courses taken, research and publications, and/or other professional experiences.
  3. Significant and diverse biology coursework at the graduate level.
  4. Capacity to develop a research program in science education.
  5. Demonstrated ability to apply a culturally responsive and flexible approach that is sensitive to the diverse needs, including universal access, of our students, faculty, administrators and the public.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • At least one year of post-doctoral experience.
  • Teaching experience in secondary Science Education (grades 7-12).
  • Experience in teaching core courses in introductory biology.
  • Record of successful grantsmanship.
