Assistant Professor or Provost Fellow

University of Chicago
Location

Salary

The Political Science Department at the University of Chicago seeks applications from scholars engaging issues of colonialism, empire, and their contemporary legacies around the world. We especially welcome applications from scholars of Comparative Politics, International Relations, and Comparative Racial Politics. Themes of particular interest include: the legacies of slavery; the politics of indentured servitude; the practices of colonial and/or imperial rule; forced migration; genocidal violence; interstate relations involving former colonies; and economic (inter)dependence in the global south. One goal of the search is to increase the diversity of the faculty in the Department, and we therefore strongly encourage applicants who come from groups historically underrepresented in the discipline, such as black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, American Indian, or Alaskan Native.

Successful candidates will be appointed either as an Assistant Professor or as a Provost Fellow with an initial two-year faculty appointment at the rank of Instructor. This initial period is intended to serve in lieu of a postdoctoral appointment for the same period, during which Provost Fellows will teach one class per year.  At the end of their initial term, Provost Fellows will ordinarily be promoted to Assistant Professor.

Appointments may begin as early as July 1, 2018. Review of applications will begin September 15, 2017, and will continue until the position is filled or the search is closed; early submission is encouraged. Applications must be submitted through the University of Chicago's Academic Career Opportunities website          http://tinyurl.com/yc5dkzk7

Applications must include: 1) a cover letter that, among other things, describes the applicant's prior and potential contributions to diversity in the context of academic research, teaching, and service; 2) a curriculum vitae; 3) a research statement addressing current research and future plans for research; 4) a teaching statement addressing teaching experience and philosophy; 5) one sample of scholarly writing (a published article or unpublished paper or chapter); and 6) three letters of reference.

Questions regarding the application process should be sent to Rose Lewis at relewis@uchicago.edu
