University of Massachusetts Amherst has a full-time 43-week or 52-week professional Staff Attorney (level 28) position available in the Student Legal Services Office. Under the supervision of the SLSO Directing Attorney, the attorney will: provide legal services and education to students and student groups; provide legal counsel to and policy advocacy for student governance bodies and student leaders on issues of concern to the student body; participate in the provision of community legal education. Duties require advisement and counseling of students on legal issues, referral to outside legal counsel, legal document preparation, representation, mediation, litigation, lobbying, educating students on legal rights and obligations and the legal process, and participating in multicultural and diversity education and training.

 

The position requires a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited institution and membership in the Massachusetts Bar plus demonstrated ability to carry out the educational functions of the position; substantial experience in higher education law in preferred. The successful candidate must have two years of experience in the practice of law. Some evening and weekend hours and some travel are required.

 

This is a benefited 43-week or 52-week position, depending on budgetary constraints, to be determined at the time of offer. The hiring salary range for the Staff Attorney position is $51,000 – $77,000 (Normal starting salary range: $51,000 - $64,000) plus benefits. Salary reflects a 52-week position and will be adjusted according to the percent time of the position offered.
