THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT AUSTIN   Assistant or Associate Vice President, THE OFFICE OF RESEARCH SUPPORT AND COMPLIANCE

The University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin) invites applications for the position of Assistant or Associate Vice President for Research (AVPR) for The Office of Research Support and Compliance (RSC). The successful candidate will be given the title of Assistant or Associate Vice-President depending on qualifications. The AVPR will provide leadership, direction, and management of the RSC, including fiscal oversight, policy, regulation, and general administration.

The AVPR sets direction and establishes priorities and activities within the RSC including oversight, administration, implementation, and management of policies and procedures related to research involving humans, animals, plants, microbes, and chemical/biological toxins, and ensures compliance with University, local, and federal regulations including those regarding disclosure of financial and other interests that could be conflicts of interest affecting objectivity in research. This position presents a unique and exciting opportunity to oversee the expansion of the health science.

This position oversees personnel and operational functions of the RSC, takes a proactive role in the professional development of staff as well as in the modernization and conceptualization of review protocol systems for researchers, and supports the review committees. Developing strong and trusting relationships with internal and external stakeholders is compulsory, and understanding the impact of brand awareness on those stakeholders, such as faculty, scientists, postdoctoral fellows, students, administrators, regulators, and funders, is fundamental to the success of the individual in this role.

The AVPR ensures ongoing accreditation for human and animal research programs, as well as implementation of a comprehensive web-based campus outreach program that offers relevant training for students, faculty, and staff to ensure that regulatory requirements are incorporated into best research practices. This individual will serve as the primary point of contact for internal and external inquiries or complaints regarding regulatory compliance involving human, animal, plant, and microbial research subjects; initiates investigations; coordinates both internal and external audits/inspections; and reports directly to the Associate Vice President for Research. The AVPR has a thorough understanding that regulatory compliance is a balance of high standards of integrity and trust, structures to self-reporting, review, and accountability.

The AVPR manages financial interest declarations and documentation for a Tier 1 University that houses both academic units and a medical school. The position also supports four federally mandated, institutional regulatory committees (a health sciences IRB and a social behavioral IRB, IACUC, and IBC) composed primarily of UT Austin faculty members and scientists and works with the chairpersons of these committees to review, make recommendations on, and participate in the development of campus procedures to meet federal regulations and University policy requirements.

Required Qualifications: An advanced degree plus five years of experience in the management and administration of a large research support office as lead or deputy-lead, and evidence of knowledge of IRB, IACUC, and/or IBC regulations certification. Demonstrated knowledge of programs and processes of primary granting agencies and federal regulations, and the vision to develop innovative strategies for meeting regulatory compliance issues while providing excellent customer-friendly service for faculty, students, and other researchers affiliated with the University. Strong leadership, diplomatic, and written and oral communication skills are required to effectively and efficiently manage a multifaceted program that deals with very complex regulatory issues.

Preferred Qualifications: A doctoral degree plus over five years of experience in management

and administration. Capacity to contribute to our commitment to diversity and inclusion based on experience in teaching, research, and administration. Experience leading a research support office at a major university with a diverse research portfolio, including biomedical and/or clinical research. Experience in conducting research and/or teaching in an academic setting will be viewed as a strength. Ability to provide organizational leadership to complete the transition to a fully electronic operation, maintain accreditation status of the University's human and animal research programs, and manage staff responsibilities and workload so the operation continues to meet evolving needs and expectations. CIP, CPIA, or biosafety certification, serving as a site visitor for accrediting organizations, and service on an accreditation council. The Institution: The University of Texas at Austin is located in Central Texas near Lake Travis and the beautiful Hill Country. The University, home to over 50,000 students, 2,800 faculty, and 20,000 staff members, is a major research university with annual research funding exceeding $600 million. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with faculty, researchers, and staff of one of the most highly rated public research universities in the U.S.

Application Procedures: Nominations and applications will be reviewed beginning August 18, 2017 and will be accepted until the position is filled. All inquiries, nominations, and applications will be treated in a confidential manner. Nominees and applicants who wish to be considered for this position should apply for job number 170801010313 via the web at http://utdirect.utexas.edu/pnjobs.
