Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences (PNWU) was founded as a 501(c) (3) non-profit medical institution in 2005 aimed at increasing access to health care in medically underserved areas of the Pacific Northwest.

The University currently offers the degree of Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine enrolling a total of 560 medical students with plans to develop other programs and/or colleges. Interprofessional education partnerships with other universities adds another 100 students to the population. The campus includes 300 employees with academic programming spread over a five state region.

PNWU is located in Yakima, WA, a city of approximately 95,000 located in the south central part of the state near the eastern slopes of the Cascade Mountains in a major agricultural and outdoor recreation region. Position Description:
The Director of Faculty Development and CME will provide vision and oversight for all forms of faculty development, including determining appropriate support, resources, programming and training opportunities to facilitate faculty professional growth. The Director will be responsible for providing continuous improvement through a diverse range of faculty development programs designed to support teaching, leadership and research. The Director will report to the Provost.

The Director will have a history of demonstrated success bringing projects to fruition while providing creative and resourceful solutions to complex challenges. The successful candidate will demonstrate leadership skills, collaborative and participative team building skills, effective interpersonal communication and a commitment to quality and service. Candidates who have experience managing, or working within, a clinic will understand how to best utilize students on rotation. Key to success will be attention to detail, high energy, problem-solving capabilities and a respectful communication style.

Responsibilities:
Faculty Development
  • Creates a vision for faculty development within the context of the PNWU mission;
  • Creates and conducts needs assessments to develop faculty including community preceptors at local and regional sites;
  • Provides leadership in faculty development by designing, implementing and assessing a comprehensive program of faculty development to assist faculty at all career stages;
  • Provides employee training and development on practical day to day systems and programs;
  • Develops faculty development events, workshops, programs, and seminars;
  • Develop learning communities and conferences designed to improve teaching and learning;
  • Maintains an active calendar, and communicates to campus, local, national and international and faculty development opportunities;
  • Enhances individual teaching effectiveness by consulting with individual faculty to facilitate growth in appropriate pedagogy (including instructional design and educational technology), curriculum design and assessment of student learning and professional formation;
  • Provides classroom and clinical observation and peer feedback for teaching faculty;
  • Creates a culture of teaching excellence at PNWU;
  • Creates and coordinates “new faculty” orientation program;
  • Advocates for and works collaboratively with faculty and administration to create and promote educational scholarship;
  • Supports faculty in obtaining funding for educational opportunities;
  • Provides support and development specifically to the regional sites;
  • Assists regional assistant deans with educating preceptors, clinics and hospitals on how to utilize students in their facilities;
  • Creates educational materials for train the trainer programs;
  • Assists with scholarly activities;
  • Supports medical staff coordinators with credentialing issues with students
  • Understands accreditation standards and expectations specific to the department and adheres to policies and procedures to meet or exceed such standards;
  • Conduct appropriate and consistent with the philosophy and mission of PNWU;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Continuing Medical Education
  • Facilitate PNWU CME Committee meetings and tasks to include, but not limited to:
  • Collaborate with Committee Chairperson to review and modify Charter and membership as needed (for board approval);
  • Coordinate and record meetings and minutes;
  • Obtain and maintain CME sponsor accreditation with the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) and the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), (or the Washington State Medical Association (WSMA), as appropriate);
  • Develop policies and procedures;
  • Manage operational budget and commercial support;
  • Plan, design, promote, coordinate, execute, and evaluate PNWU CME activities and interventions;
  • Assess PNWU CME Program effectiveness, recommend improvements, implement action plans and monitor impact;
  • Retain records for PNWU CME activities and overall Program, to include attendance records;
  • Ensure on-site support for PNWU CME activities, to include registration, distribution and collection of materials, and providing disclosure information to participants;
  • Report information to accrediting agencies as required;
  • Design marketing and communication strategies for the PNWU CME Program, to include web design and maintenance;
  • Partner with Yakima CME Collaborative Alliance to :
  • Foster a collaborative relationship with community CME partners;
  • Participate in local and regional assessment of educational needs;
  • Promote local and regional CME activities and interventions.

Requirements:
Education:
  • Required: Master's Degree in related field
  • Preferred: Doctoral Degree
  • Preferred: Credentials as a medical provider
  • Knowledge of adult learning theory – including instructional design, learning styles, distance learning theories and practices, etc.

Experience:
  • 3-5 years of professional experience working in an institution of higher learning, preferably in the health sciences
  • Preferred work experience in a hospital or clinic setting
  • Preferred teaching experience at the rank of assistant professor or higher

Preferred Qualities:
  • Familiarity with principles and practices of Osteopathic Medicine
  • Experience working with and/or training physicians in an educational setting
  • Familiarity with current trends, methodologies and practices in medical education
  • Strength in and familiarity with educational technologies
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office Suite programs
