Applications are now being accepted for two (2) positions of Assistant Professor, History, beginning Fall 2018 (August 15, 2018) at San Diego Mesa College. Interviews will tentatively occur between February 5 and February 9, 2018.

Position 1:
This position for a world history generalist, with an emphasis on comparative civilizations from the earliest historical periods to the start of the Modern Era, c. 9,000 BCE to 1500 CE, will have the following parameters: Offering the World History I/II Sequence, but having specialization in two or more geographic areas (Asia, Europe, Middle East), with expertise in two broad chronological eras, through 1500 CE. Primary responsibility will be offering World History I (HIST 100); secondary responsibilities in World History II (HIST 101), Western Civilization I (HIST 105), and Ancient Egypt (HIST 154). Depending upon the qualifications and experience of the successful candidates and the needs of the Department, other responsibilities may include teaching courses in Introduction to Asian Civilizations (HIST120).

Position 2:
This position for a world history generalist, with an emphasis on comparative civilizations, 1500 CE to the present, will have the following parameters: Offering the World History I/II sequence, but having specialization in two or more geographic areas (Asia, Europe, Middle East) with expertise in two broad chronological eras, from the start of the modern era, 1500 CE, to the present. Primary responsibility will be offering World History II (HIST 101); secondary responsibilities in World History I (HIST 100), Western Civilization II (HIST 106), and The Modern Middle East (HIST 130). Depending upon the qualifications and experience of the successful candidates and the needs of the Department, other responsibilities may include teaching courses in Asian Civilizations in Modern Times (HIST 121).

Major Responsibilities:
Each assignment will be for 15 class hours per week, and may include day, evening and Saturday classes. Additional responsibilities of Mesa College tenured/tenure-track faculty include maintaining regular office hours for student advisement, curriculum review and development, serving on College and District committees, and participating in various departmental and college activities.

Qualifications:
Master’s in history OR Bachelor’s in history AND Master’s in political science, humanities, geography, area studies, women’s studies, social science, or ethnic studies OR the equivalent.

Desired Qualifications:
The successful candidates should demonstrate evidence of: • Historiographical and subject matter competency. • Completion of appropriate graduate level coursework in History. • Ability to teach effectively by demonstrating a working knowledge of learning styles and teaching techniques. • Recent teaching experience in World History at the lower-division college level and the ability to fairly and effectively evaluate student performance. • Experience in the development and/or review of courses and curriculum. • Effective oral communication and writing ability. • Continued professional growth in History. • Experience with, or willingness to explore, innovative teaching methodologies. • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others. • Experience and/or knowledge in working with students of great diversity in socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic background, including those with different levels of academic preparation and varying physical and learning abilities. The following qualification is desired or preferred but not required: Ph.D. in History from a regionally accredited institution.

Licenses:


Pay Information:
Class 1, Step A - Class 6, Step C ($5,697.94 - $7,677.65) per month based on the current AFT - COLLEGE Faculty Tenured-Tenured Track Monthly Salary Schedule.

Initial salary placement for this Assistant Professor is commensurate with required education and related teaching experience as outlined in section A2.1 of the AFT Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement and it is non-negotiable. The District offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package including employer paid medical, dental, vision plans, sick leave, and opportunities for professional development. This position is FLSA Exempt and may not accrue overtime. Benefits will be provided under the terms of the AFT-Guild, Local 1931 - Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement. Annual Salaries will be recalculated for service less than a full academic year based on Education Code §87815, any required adjustment will be made with-in the first pay period. Travel reimbursement for interviewees traveling more than 200 miles, one-way, may be paid according to geographic location (see SDCCD Travel Stipend Policy, Rev 7/14/2011). Typically, Assistant Professors earn tenure after 4 years and promote to Associate Professor.
