 Chair of Mechanical Engineering

Cleveland State University is searching for active, culturally and academically diverse faculty of the highest caliber.

The Washkewicz College of Engineering at Cleveland State University invites applications for the position of Chairman of the Mechanical Engineering Department.

The department has experienced remarkable growth in undergraduate enrollment, with a 50 percent increase from 2013 to 2016 and more than 100 seniors enrolled in 2016-2017. Industrial sponsorship of student projects is strong, with participation from companies such as Parker-Hannifin, Lubrizol, Lincoln Electric, NASA Glenn Research Center, Dan T. Moore Companies and others. Extramural research involving Mechanical Engineering faculty members has also been sharply increasing. Since 2014, the department has added seven new full-time faculty positions.

We seek a new chairperson who will lead our department into a new phase of growth, with particular emphasis on strengthening and enhancing our educational offerings, graduate program, and research efforts. The candidate should have a solid research and education background in the cornerstone disciplines of mechanical engineering, as well as a broad vision of its new frontiers and interdisciplinary aspects.

The candidate is expected to qualify for a tenured position in the department at the rank of Professor, although exceptionally well-qualified candidates at the rank of Associate Professor will be considered. At a minimum, the candidate must have an earned doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering or closely-related field and a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. Moreover, we expect at least seven years of experience in higher education, including teaching, research and academic administration.

In addition, candidates must have strong evidence of excellence in interpersonal skills, leadership, communication and administrative capabilities and ability to engage with local industry and community partners.

Preferred qualifications include a track record of scholarship and research funding, evidence of leadership and significant experience in academic administration, including accomplishments in graduate program improvement, promoting faculty research and a good track record of university-industry collaboration; ability to contribute through teaching and/or service to the diversity, cultural sensitivity, and excellence of the academic community.

The College’s enrollment has increased by 300% over the last 10 years. It now has about 1,900 undergraduate and 650 graduate students. An additional 100,000 sq.ft. engineering building is under construction, with the first phase opening in late 2017. The building will include a state-of-the-art maker space, freshman design lab, instructional labs, a motion control laboratory, additive manufacturing facilities, as well as research facilities.

Cleveland State University is located in downtown Cleveland, a city that has undergone remarkable renewal and revitalization. This includes downtown living with restaurants and shopping in a family friendly environment, professional teams in major sports and a world-class symphony orchestra.

Applications received by December 1, 2017 will receive full consideration. However, the position will remain open until filled. Application materials must be submitted online through the Human Resources website at Cleveland State University http://hrjobs.csuohio.edu/postings/7949 and include a cover letter addressing how the candidate’s experience match the position requirements, a curriculum vitae and contact information for at least five references.

Hiring is contingent on maintaining existing levels of funding from the state of Ohio. Offer of employment is contingent on satisfactory completion of the University’s verification of credentials and other information required by law and/or University policies or practices, including, but not limited to, a criminal background check.
