Executive Director - Georgia Center for Early Language and Literacy

Founded in 2017 as a statewide Center for early language and literacy located on the Georgia College campus, this Center promotes research-based practices for children from birth to age eight, as well as their families, communities, and teachers in childcare centers, pre-schools, and K-3 classrooms. The Center partners with universities, technical college early childhood education programs, alternative educator preparation programs and other public and private stakeholders to engage the community-at-large in the important goal of improving Georgia’s literacy rate as measured by the end of third grade. Governance responsibilities for the Center are held by a Board that is appointed by the Governor of the State of Georgia. The Board includes representatives from a range of public and private organizations committed to early language and literacy improvement.

The goals of the Georgia Center for Early Language and Literacy (G-CELL) are:

  • Improve the third-grade literacy rates of children throughout the state of Georgia.
  • Provide early learning centers, pre-schools, K-3rd grades, colleges, and universities with an effective professional development model to increase literacy rates.
  • Seek external funding in support of the Center’s mission.

The Executive Director will be responsible for advancing the statewide mission and developing and executing the overall strategic management of the Georgia Center for Early Language and Literacy (G-CELL). The Executive Director will work closely with leaders throughout the state of Georgia. Reporting to the Provost and Board of Directors, the Executive Director will lead operational objectives and provide inspiring and compelling strategic leadership to the G-CELL. The Executive Director will be responsible for all aspects of G-CELL’s work in support of key policy drivers for early language and literacy issues. This includes communicating directly with national and state opinion audiences and media, formulating strategic alliances with non-profit organizations, initiating key partnerships with state and private universities, as well as the state’s technical college system, overseeing evaluation and research as it relates to G-CELL programs, and maintaining enthusiasm for the enhancing of early language and literacy in Georgia. The ideal candidate is a collegial, consensus-building, visionary leader who is comfortable with providing the strategic direction for a unique Center that provides statewide, early language and literacy support.

Master’s degree in early language, literacy, K-12 school administration or equivalent education/experience that includes significant administrative and budget experience, a strong track record working with multiple stakeholders, and extensive knowledge of a balanced literacy framework. A minimum of 10 years of leadership experience in early language and literacy, higher education, foundations, or related nonprofit organizations of similar size to G-CELL.
