OVERVIEW

The MIT Sloan School of Management seeks an innovative and experienced leader to head the Career Development Office (CDO) at one of the world’s leading business schools. Reporting to the Executive Director, Student Services, the Senior Director, Career Development Office will provide strategic vision and leadership of career services and programming for all Sloan students and alumni. This is an exceptional opportunity to lead a dynamic team and to further position Sloan’s accomplished students and alumni for success in an increasingly complex global business community.

The Senior Director will enhance and expand career education and job search programming for multiple advanced degree programs that are critical to the School’s success. This individual will also develop a strategic approach to the creation and delivery of career services for alumni and undergraduate students. S/he will manage existing relationships with employers and will identify new opportunities for strategic partnerships. The Senior Director will provide visible leadership and supervision to 21 professional staff, including two Directors, ensuring high level service and rapid response to the changing global management landscape.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a remarkable School universally recognized for the exceptional quality of its academic programs and promotion of innovation and entrepreneurism among faculty, students, and alumni. The ideal candidate will possess at least ten years of experience in higher education career management with a recognized institution.  This individual may also come from an industry background in a recruiting leadership role that interfaces with recognized business schools. S/he must bring demonstrated knowledge of management education and career services, as well as a proven track record of effectively managing a diverse and talented team of professionals. An advanced degree is required, with an MBA preferred. The candidate must demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills to be an effective representative of Sloan with executives and corporate partners, and a key liaison to the School’s leadership team, faculty, students, and highly-successful alumni.

David Schmittlein

John C. Head III Dean

David Schmittlein joined the MIT Sloan School of Management as John C. Head III Dean in October, 2007. His focus, since arriving on campus, has been to broaden MIT Sloan's global visibility, work with the faculty to create new high-quality management education programs, develop enhanced educational opportunities for current students, and to develop and disseminate business knowledge that has impact and will stand the test of time. He has also reached out to the many members of MIT's alumni community to gain their valuable insights on MIT Sloan and management education.

Prior to his appointment at MIT Sloan, Dean Schmittlein served on the faculty at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania from 1980 until 2007. While at Wharton, he was the Ira A. Lipman Professor and Professor of Marketing. He also served as Interim Dean during July 2007 and as Deputy Dean from 2000-2007. In addition, he was chair of the editorial board for Wharton School Publishing. Dean Schmittlein received a Ph.D. and M.Phil. in Business from Columbia University and B.A. in Mathematics (magna cum laude) from Brown University. His research assesses marketing processes and develops methods for improving marketing decisions. He is widely regarded for his work estimating the impact of a firm's marketing actions, designing market and survey research, and creating effective communication strategies.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT AT MIT SLOAN

The Career Development Office (CDO) plays a vital role in connecting MIT Sloan’s innovative students with the world’s leading firms. The CDO consists of a 21-member professional staff team that serves a large student body within a diverse portfolio of degree programs, including the MBA Program, Master of Finance Program (MFin), Masters of Business Analytics Program (MBAn), Masters of Science in Management Studies Program (MSMS), Sloan Fellows Program, Executive MBA Program, and Alumni Career Services. CDO also works in close collaboration with admissions, program directors, and faculty, each contributing effectively to a seamless and positive student experience.

MIT Sloan students are encouraged to engage in career education and development, and benefit from personal career advising and coaching, self-assessment tools, workshops, online resources, job fairs, and events. MBA students begin building essential career management skills in the first semester through Career Core, a comprehensive career curriculum delivered in partnership with the Communications and Organizational Processes faculty. CDO is increasingly offering services for MIT Sloan alumni. This involves a full range of services that spans one’s career, supporting and guiding the recent graduate toward his/her next job opportunity or assisting an accomplished professional looking for a new career challenge.

On-campus recruiting is a powerful tool for both students and companies. Over 200 employers recruit on campus every year. At MIT Sloan, 60 percent of students typically accept full-time employment through on-campus recruiting, while 40 percent find positions through alternate venues, including job postings which number over 2000 per annum, alumni contacts, networking events, and other search strategies. MIT Sloan attracts recruiting companies from a variety of industries and specialties, including consulting, corporate finance, investment banking, investment management, telecommunications, technology, energy, diversified pharmaceuticals, and biotechnology.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION

The Career Development Office can have a significant impact on the School’s visibility and influence nationally and internationally. The Senior Director will develop and implement a career development strategy to achieve the long and short-term goals of MIT Sloan, including the growth and delivery of career services and programs for alumni and select undergraduate students. Reporting directly to the Executive Director, Student Services, the Senior Director will ensure that programming, coaching and services are in support of MIT

Sloan’s mission. S/he will interface with students, faculty, and alumni; and will work extensively with colleagues in other top business schools, strategic partners, and employers.

The following are the specific responsibilities and duties of this position:

 

Provide strategic vision and leadership for CDO and its staff

The Senior Director will develop a long-term vision and strategy to successfully position the CDO in an increasingly competitive business education marketplace. This individual will ensure that services across all degree programs and with alumni are delivered effectively and aligned with the strategic vision of the School. The Senior Director will manage a team of highly engaged and capable professionals. S/he will ensure that adequate systems and resources are available to manage growth; and that staff goals are aligned appropriately and their professional development is encouraged. S/he will foster an environment where staff are recognized as productive members of the MIT Sloan community, one that encourages collaboration, innovation, and ownership.

 

Develop career education and job search programming for the career lifespan

The Senior Director will take into account the quality of the student experience, ensuring that students at all levels have access to exemplary career services, and make student employment a priority. S/he will ensure that career services are developed and enhanced appropriately for students at varying levels of professional experience. This individual will encourage program innovation for each distinctive degree program, and explore ways to leverage partnership opportunities within MIT Sloan and external organizations. The Senior Director will also develop a strategic approach to the delivery of alumni career services, an important initiative that will assist in the competitive positioning of MIT Sloan.

 

Anticipate and capitalize on trends and emerging developments in the global marketplace

The Senior Director will lead the effort to ensure that CDO is innovative and nimble in its response to market changes and employment trends. S/he will regularly benchmark against peer schools and corporate human resources functions. The Senior Director will be knowledgeable of how the market is changing, where future opportunities will present themselves and communicate effectively with employers on how students across all programs will satisfy their human capital needs.

 

Enhance business development and corporate partnerships

The Senior Director will take advantage of the significant opportunities to connect the School to business leaders and identify new opportunities for strategic partnerships.  S/he will be an energetic leader capable of deep engagement and coordination in business development. The Senior Director will help employers understand the value of engaging with CDO and why MIT Sloan is the choice for recruitment at every level. S/he will nurture relationships with employers that enhance recruitment and drive the School’s visibility to higher levels of recognition.

 

Raise the profile of CDO within Sloan and to alumni

The Senior Director will be a strong advocate for CDO in a way that captures the breadth of its mission and publicizes the concrete results of its work. The Senior Director will be a visible leader, managing internal and external marketing initiatives, and will represent the School with business media on career and job-market trends and topics. S/he will raise CDO’s national and international presence by enhancing its position as a provider of exceptional career services in support of its diverse population of students and alumni.

 

Manage resources and operations critical to the success of CDO

Working closely with the Executive Director, the Senior Director will provide strategic management of CDO’s resources, and will develop budgets and operational forecasts, including employment reports. S/he will develop metrics in order to analyze the effectiveness of programs and services, communicating the outcomes to MIT Sloan senior leadership, and will develop programs in response to the needs of students and employers. The Senior Director will ensure client, staff, faculty, and student satisfaction at all levels and will foster an environment of exceptional customer service.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

The successful candidate will demonstrate most of the following experience and personal qualities:

  • An understanding of the nature of management education and the needs and aspirations of Sloan students, alumni, and corporate partners.
  • Must be market-oriented; have an understanding of the ways in which the employment market for students and alumni is changing and the ability to adapt or create services as needed.
  • Strong leadership skills and a track record of effectively managing a diverse and talented team of professionals; deep experience in developing staff and building effective teams is essential.
  • An understanding of and appreciation for the use of performance metrics and data-driven decision-making.
  • A keen eye for operational efficiency and optimal use of resources.
  • The credibility, maturity, and sound judgment required to effectively engage, influence and leverage a broad range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Superior communication skills and the ability to connect with a variety of audiences including Sloan’s senior leadership, faculty, senior executives, and the media; the experience and ability to be an effective and outgoing spokesperson for Sloan.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills as well as a high degree of comfort working on a global basis; cultural sensitivity as well as a commitment to a diversity of perspectives and an excitement for global cultures.
  • At least ten or more years of professional experience and knowledge of business/management careers and/or career services.
  • A Master’s degree is required, MBA degree desirable.
