Director, Energy Science, Technology, and Policy (ESTP) Professional Master's Program

Carnegie Mellon University’s College of Engineering seeks a Director for the Energy Science, Technology, and Policy (ESTP) Master’s Program. Launched in 2009, ESTP is a leading energy-focused masters-level graduate program and offers two interdisciplinary Master's degrees to students from diverse engineering and science backgrounds. The program is designed to prepare graduates for positions of responsibility in one of the many energy-related job markets, including traditional utility companies and energy suppliers, alternative and renewable energy companies, power generation and distribution equipment companies, energy intensive manufacturing and operating companies, consulting companies, NGOs, non-profits, government, and academic institutions. Some students also go on to earn their Ph.D. in other programs. You will continue this tradition of excellence and apply your own vision for the program’s success. Qualifications Sought: You have a Ph.D. or other terminal doctoral degree in an energy-related Engineering or Science field. You are also able to teach one or more courses in energy-related disciplines, and you demonstrate the ability effectively lead an academic program.

This position requires enthusiasm, tact, and excellent people skills in the professional conduct of academic and professional business activities. You have a demonstrated ability to conduct research and publish results in a relevant field, along with the ability to collaborate formally and informally with other faculty. Those with experience in academia, industry, government, or the non-profit sector will be considered, and rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications.

Commensurate responsibilities include:

• Set marketing direction and goals including outreach to students and industrial / corporate audiences using website, social networking, print, and other media.
• Work with staff to recruit and retain high quality and diverse applicants by participating in info sessions, supporting prospective student outreach, responding to inquiries, and meeting with prospects.
• Direct the admissions processes; manage and participate in the application review committee process and admissions decisions.
• Lead new student orientation and onboarding. Set objectives and participate in student advising sessions; provide 1:1 advising when appropriate. Coordinate the tracking of degree progress, student sign-off on degree requirements, and certification for graduation.
• Chair the ESTP curriculum and work with the Faculty Steering Committee on performance, benchmarking, and improvements. Meet with core faculty to coordinate the teaching of the core energy mini-courses. Teach energy core and/or elective courses as appropriate. Work with partner engineering departments and faculty to facilitate EST&P disciplinary concentration and master’s project course availability.
• Build relationships across the university. Represent ESTP at College and University meetings.
• Serve as master of ceremonies for the Diploma Ceremony each spring semester.
• Serve as primary ESTP program contact for corporate and industry relations; work with energy employers (companies, government, NGOs) to facilitate high quality internship placements, full-time employment opportunities, and corporate-sponsored projects for students
• Manage the ESTP program budget to maintain program financial sustainability.
• Approve all ESTP program contracts and assure program compliance with University policies and business practices.
• Coordinate and supervise activities of ESTP Associate Director, Admissions & Program Coordinator, and part-time staff plus student workers.
• Build an inclusive ESTP culture
