Assistant Dean, Graduate Strategic Initiatives

Independently uses and applies in-depth knowledge and experience in the specific policy field on projects that typically impact the entire organization or programs external to the organization. Operates in a highly visible, politically sensitive, legally complex and evolving arena. Uses advanced professional concepts and objectives to address and resolve complex policy or program issues. Works on significant, strategic issues and problems requiring political sensitivity, where analysis of circumstances and information requires an in-depth evaluation of factors.

 

A principal advisor to the Graduate Division Dean and serves as a senior member of the Dean's cabinet, advising and providing analytical support and leadership on a variety of projects of importance to the Graduate Division and campus. Supports the Dean in all areas relating to the Graduate Division mission, but primarily supports graduate strategic initiatives and projects such as growing M.S. programs, organizational review and the design, development and implementation of new programs and initiatives intended to improve the graduate student experience at UC San Diego. Helps coordinate collaborative efforts within Graduate Division and between the Dean's Office and external partners. Is the chief architect in designing and driving the implementation of Graduate Division strategic initiatives across the campus on the Dean's behalf. Maintains the confidentiality of privileged information, and performs a wide range of duties that require tact, sensitivity, independent judgment, diplomacy, discretion, and flexibility. Provides leadership, direction, oversight and implementation of Graduate Division communications and social media platforms in alignment with the vision and strategies of the Graduate Division and UC San Diego. Represents the Dean of the Graduate Division to entities within and outside of the University as needed. Provides development leadership for internal and external stakeholders.

 

• Must be willing and able to travel. Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

• Demonstrated knowledge/work experience with higher education/administration, including: educational philosophies/methods, instructional programs, curriculum development, instructional technology, degree requirements, admissions processes, outreach, and student financial support for both undergraduate and graduate student populations.

• Expert knowledge of the organization's processes, protocols and procedures and external regulatory requirements in policy domain.

• Experienced in application of organizational development concepts to perform complex analysis to understand past performance and determine present and future performance and/or resource allocations and resolutions. Experienced ability to select methods and techniques for obtaining desired outcomes. Demonstrated record of achievement in analyzing proposed programs and initiatives, recognizing complex interactions and potential impact, and making recommendations.

• Experience in graduate education administration: advising, program development, policy, and/or graduate support administration.

• Highly skilled in all levels of project management. Significant and successful project management and development experience demonstrating the ability to lead and manage multiple engagements and priorities.

• Highly skilled communication and interpersonal skills to communicate with and influence others, both verbally and in writing. Strong communication skills with superior active listening skills. Demonstrated outstanding verbal skills to effectively interact tactfully and diplomatically, yet assertively, with all levels of personnel and segments of the campus and community. Demonstrated outstanding writing skills with an ability to clearly and accurately express substance and nuance in written communications and ability to produce complex, high-quality, clear and concise written reports, policies and communications.

• Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality. Demonstrated ability to maintain strict confidentiality, accuracy and attention to detail to respond to unexpected job demands and keep pace with rapidly changing priorities and deadlines. Knowledge of and/or experience with FERPA regulations.

• Expert analytical / problem-solving skills. Using expertise problem-solving skills, anticipate and/or analyze, and develop and implement innovative new procedures, practices and processes which are adaptable to constantly changing work patterns and business methods.
