ASSISTANT OR ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF PSYCHOLOGY/NEUROSCIENCE:
Pending administrative approval, the Union College Department of Psychology seeks a cognitive neuroscientist who will play a key role in our Neuroscience major. Advanced candidates would assume the responsibilities of co-directing our Neuroscience major starting in the second year of the appointment, while junior candidates would eventually take on this role.
The area of specialization and model of analysis (i.e., human, animal, computational) within Cognitive Neuroscience are open. We will give priority to candidates with specialties that will both increase breadth and offer synergy with the existing research areas covered by our Psychology and Neuroscience faculty. We expect that the successful candidate will be able to teach an entry-level neuroscience class, attention and memory, cognitive neuroscience with a laboratory component, and an upper-level seminar in his or her area of interest. The ability to teach research methods and judgment and decision making is also highly desirable. The successful candidate is expected to maintain an active program of research in which our students play a meaningful role. Ph.D. by appointment date preferred; teaching load is two courses per ten-week trimester.
The Neuroscience major is presently the largest Interdisciplinary Studies major at Union; roughly 70% of our alumni go onto top-ranked Neuroscience graduate programs, medical schools, or post-baccalaureate training in other health professions. The rapidly growing major is hosted in our NSF-funded Center for Neuroscience, where affiliated faculty members have offices and lab space. The facility is equipped with EEG/ERP technology; there are also opportunities for faculty to collaborate with researchers at Albany Medical Center, Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital, and other local institutions. Ongoing collaborative research has led to NIH, NSF, and private-foundation funding; and high-impact publications, integrating MRI, bioassay, and other medical-outcome data.
Founded in 1795, Union College is a small, selective, private college with a history of excellence in the liberal arts, sciences, and engineering. Both the College and the department take pride in offering our students rigorous and engaging learning experiences and the opportunity to participate in cutting-edge research. The College is continuing this commitment by beginning a $100-million renovation and expansion of the Science and Engineering Building that will transform how students and faculty in Psychology and Neuroscience interact with colleagues in related fields.
The College is located in New York’s Capital Region, a metropolitan area of just over one million people. Our region offers affordable, livable neighborhoods and interesting cultural and recreational opportunities. Both New York City and Boston are located within a three-hour drive from campus.
Union College is an equal opportunity employer and is strongly committed to student and workforce diversity. Union provides a blend of intellectual, social, and cultural opportunities to facilitate the integrated academic, social, and personal development of a diverse community. We value and are committed to a host of diverse populations and cultures including, but not limited to, those based on race, religion, disability, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, national origin, and veteran status.
Candidates should send, in PDF format, (1) an application letter, (2) a curriculum vitae, (3) statements of teaching and research interests, (4) evidence of teaching effectiveness including any course evaluations and peer evaluations that are available, (5) evidence of scholarship, and (6) statement regarding experience working with diverse student populations and/or ability to contribute to a diverse community, to Prof George Bizer, chair of the search committee, at email@example.com. Three recommendation letters should also be sent to this address. Please submit applications by September 8, 2017.
