Tenure Track Assistant Professor in Film Production

Position Description

Seattle University’s Film Studies Program, housed within the English Department, seeks applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Film Production beginning September 1, 2018.

His/her creative and critical skills will be in film and new media production with particular strengths in new media storytelling, activism or social justice filmmaking. The ideal candidate might specialize in digital storytelling, documentary or experimental filmmaking, but must also have the capacity to teach across the film production curriculum, from introductory filmmaking to more advanced classes in editing, cinematography or sound design. The ability to teach innovative classes in VR/augmented/360 storytelling, video installation, screenwriting or different modes, such as animation, together with classes in the history or theory of film industries and/or technologies would be an advantage.

In keeping with Seattle U's mission of academic excellence and social justice, candidates will have a strong creative record and successful teaching at the college level, and demonstrate a capacity to embed collaborative learning, community outreach and service learning into their teaching. The successful candidate will teach both general education courses in visual storytelling or visual culture as part of the CORE curriculum, as well as courses designed primarily for Film majors.

 

Responsibilities include:

teaching, supervising production equipment purchasing and upgrades, contributing to current curricular revision and updating of the BA (as well as a possible MFA), developing program partnerships with Seattle film and community organizations, running student film festivals and other special events and helping with the program’s community outreach.

 

Qualifications

MFA or Ph.D. in Film Studies or related field (by Spring 2018) with primary expertise in film production; secondary expertise in Film Studies advantageous.
