Applications are being accepted for an Assistant Director in the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence (CTLE) at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in Richmond, Virginia. The CTLE advances the university's mission by fostering professional development experiences designed to actively promote, enhance, and assess teaching effectiveness and student learning.

The Assistant Director is a full-time, 12 month position. Reporting to the CTLE Director, the Assistant Director will support a variety of high-impact educational development activities, help manage and coordinate day-to-day operations, provide leadership for CTLE initiatives and programs, and represent the CTLE to its constituents. Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assist with evaluation and communication activities that address the impact of the CTLE on institutional goals
  • Maintain a current understanding of educational development research
  • Maintain a current and deep understanding of evidence-based teaching and learning practices across learning modalities
  • Design and facilitate teaching workshops and seminars for faculty and graduate students
  • Participate in teaching-related committee work at the university, school, department and unit levels
  • Consult with faculty, postdoc, and graduate student instructors about evidence-based teaching strategies, course design, effective use of educational technologies, and collection of data on student learning outcomes
  • Conduct individual teaching consultations
  • Work with departments and faculty to assess teaching and learning
  • Periodically teach in one's discipline to maintain first-hand experience
  • Collaborate with center staff to develop, implement, assess and administer instructional development programs
  • Support scholarly teaching efforts and programs including the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL)
  • Contribute to national discussions on educational development and scholarly teaching
  • Build teaching community within VCU

Candidates must possess these minimum qualifications:

  • A Master's degree or higher from an accredited university
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environments
  • Strong verbal and written communication, interpersonal, and consultation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects and events independently
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with team members, faculty, staff, and administrators to achieve institutional goals
  • Thorough knowledge of effective pedagogies to enhance significant student learning in face-to-face, hybrid, and fully online modalities

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience editing websites
  • Knowledge of adult learning theory, instructional design and assessment, and instructional technology
  • Knowledge of discourse and research on learning spaces
  • Conversant with the literature on educational development, the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning (SoTL), and learning science research
  • Demonstrated excellence in the ability to consult across disciplines and teaching contexts and to work collaboratively and effectively in settings of cultural, social and intellectual diversity;
  • High comfort level with education technologies commonly used in higher education (e.g. Blackboard LMS, lecture capture, voicethread, and audience response systems)
