The Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering (Faculty of Applied Science) and the Department of Wood Science (Faculty of Forestry) at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver campus, invites applications for a President’s Excellence Research Chair in Forest Bioproducts. The Chair position is expected to be an appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor. Applicants are expected to have a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science and Engineering, Wood Science or related fields and eligibility to register with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia would be an asset.

The Chair is expected to provide international leadership in their field of study through proven excellent teaching skills and a field- defining research program that will provide the innovations needed to advance Canada’s emerging forest-resource bio-economy. Collegial interaction will be an important element in success. The candidate will join a cluster of several UBC leading researchers and will solidify UBC as the leader in engineering thermo-chemical, catalytic and/or biochemical processes for transforming forest biomass into value-added bio-products (http://fbp.ubc.ca/faculty/).

Applicants must have an exceptional international reputation in the field. Preference will be given to applicants having expertise at the interface of catalysis, including bio and nanoatalysis and material science as applied to advanced biomaterials, nanotechnology, and co-products derived from renewable resources. That interdisciplinary expertise may include, but is not limited to catalyst discovery and design for molecular functionalization and conversion of plant-derived biomass, functional fibre materials engineering; catalytic reaction engineering, green chemistry applied to lignocellulosic materials; and nanocellulose enabled functional materials. Teaching at the graduate and undergraduate level is expected. The anticipated start date for the position is July 1, 2018. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering offers programs leading to the Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.Sc.) degree in Chemical Engineering and to the Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.Sc.) degree in Chemical and Biological Engineering. Graduate programs leading to the degrees of M.Eng. M.A.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. are also offered. Details about the Department's current research and degree programs are available at http://www.chbe.ubc.ca.

The Department of Wood Science offers both undergraduate and graduate programs leading to BSc, and MSc, MASc and PhD degrees, respectively. The undergraduate is an award winning program that includes, amongst others, advanced wood products processing, industrial processing technology, business management and marketing, and science, engineering and biotechnology. A new program in bio-materials and bio-energy is currently under development. The graduate degrees are offered in many fields related to wood science & technology, renewable material processing, biotechnology, bioenergy and the forest products industry, processing and business.
