Brief Description of Duties:
The Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science at Stony Brook University seeks a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will contribute to research focused on building effective science communication curriculum that supports women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) fields. The Alda Center recognizes that gender dynamics in STEM fields often disadvantage women. Communication plays an important role in facilitating lasting cultural change. The Alda Method combines improvisational theater techniques that help scientists to pay dynamic attention to the needs of their listeners and learn to spontaneously adjust to those needs. This approach integrates techniques to help scientists distill their message, shape compelling stories, create common ground, and use conversational language that fosters genuine human connections. This position will advance new research that can help us create a better understanding of specific communication challenges that undermine women's full participation in STEM. In collaboration with the Alda Center faculty, the Postdoctoral Research Associate will have the opportunity to build on and adapt the Center's existing curriculum so that it can have a positive impact on gender dynamics in STEM fields.

The Postdoctoral Research Associate will focus on advancing research and training curriculum designed to support women in STEM. Working in collaboration with Alda Center faculty and staff, the successful candidate will be responsible for synthesizing research on gender, communication, and STEM, conducting new research, analyzing data, co-designing new curriculum, testing curriculum in the Alda Center's on-the-road-workshops, presenting work at conferences, preparing publications, collaborating on grant proposals. The Postdoctoral Associate will receive support to become a certified Alda Science Communication Trainer and will help to implement Alda training in the U.S. and abroad. The training experience will enable the Postdoc to conduct research on communication, gender, and STEM in the context of real-world application. The candidate may also teach up to three credits per semester depending on need and interest and may also help to train new Alda Center trainers. Other duties as assigned, which may include attending scientific conferences and meetings.

  • Conduct research in the field of science communication, including conducting literature reviews, collecting and analyzing data.

Please add three attachments to the application: 1. CV (including publications, conference participation and teaching/workshop training experience), 2. Cover letter., 3. Personal Statement (1-2 pages) that outlines your interest in working in the Alda Center, your perspective on the most effective ways to support science communication, and your background experience with and interest in conducting research and linking research with curriculum design.
