Faculty Position in the Biology of Photosynthetic Organisms

The MSU-DOE Plant Research Laboratory (PRL) has a tenure-track, twelve-month faculty position available at the Assistant Professor level. We seek to recruit an individual who investigates fundamental questions addressing at mechanistic levels the biology of plants, algae, or photosynthetic bacteria. Relevant research areas include, but are not limited to regulation of photosynthetic light reactions/ light capture/ energy dissipation/electron transport reactions; primary metabolism/carbon fixation/carbon allocation/organ growth and development; chloroplast biogenesis/biology; integration of photosynthetic growth and environment. Individuals are expected to employ state-of-the art approaches, which may include but are not limited to advanced molecular and structural biology, cell biology, genetics and genomics, metabolomics, synthetic biology, phenomics, or predictive modeling.

The PRL, with long-standing funding from U.S. DOE-BES, provides a highly collaborative environment for conducting creative, fundamental research on photosynthetic organisms, with a research core focused on energy-related science aimed at improving photosynthetic robustness and productivity. The research core coexists with interdisciplinary research aimed broadly at studying photosynthetic organisms. More information on the breadth of PRL research is available at https://prl.natsci.msu.edu/research/. PRL faculty are full members of the MSU tenure-stream faculty and jointly appointed in an academic department. Applicants must have a PhD and postdoctoral research experience with evidence of productivity and potential for independent research that contributes to the DOE-BES priorities at the PRL but also expands the breadth of the PRL research portfolio.

Applications must include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, summary of research accomplishments, a 3-5 page plan for future research that details specifically how the candidate envisions their research will fit within and complement the PRL core research focus as well as how they will establish independent research directions. A statement of teaching and mentoring experience and philosophy as well as contact information for three referees should also be provided. Application materials should be submitted as PDF file through the MSU applicant page at https://careers.msu.edu (position # 448744). Questions regarding this position should be directed to the chair of the search committee, Federica Brandizzi (fb@msu.edu). Consideration of applicants will begin on October 1, 2017.

MSU is an affirmative-action, equal-opportunity employer and is committed to achieving excellence through diversity. The University actively encourages applications of women, persons of color, veterans, and persons with disabilities, and we endeavor to facilitate employment assistance to spouses or partners of candidates for faculty and academic staff positions.
