Librarian for Political Science, Policy Studies, and Government Information

The Pennsylvania State University Libraries invite applications and nominations for a proactive, creative, and inventive librarian to fill a tenure track, faculty position as part of the Social Sciences Library. Duties of this position include working in a liaison role with the Political Science Department, which includes a wide range of degree programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including American and comparative politics, international relations, political methodology, and a new program in Social Data Analytics. In addition, the Librarian will provide broad support to the Penn State community of students and faculty working across a spectrum of disciplines in areas of policy and law, and oversee the Libraries' government information program. This is a 12-month, tenure-track position reporting to the Head of the Social Sciences Library. Core Responsibilities: Serve as liaison and initiate outreach to the Political Science Department and its affiliated programs and initiatives; provide support for interdisciplinary policy-related teaching and research conducted throughout Penn State's academic departments, programs and institutes, including those engaged in health, education, labor, and environmental policy, among others; manage the library's documents collections and services, including depository agreements (U.S., Canadian, and European Union) and others (Pennsylvania, United Nations), and serve as the primary contact to the agencies that administer these programs; deliver specialized orientations and instructional sessions for departments and programs; create web research guides and other online research support tools to foster discovery and access; develop and maintain collections to meet the needs of Penn State's scholarly community; collaborate with other subject librarians as well as units throughout the Libraries, including the Law Library, the School of International Affairs, the World Campus (Penn State's Online program), scholarly communications, data services, and other campuses throughout the state; actively participate in Libraries' stewardship through committee work, task forces, and other groups as assigned; engage in campus, regional, consortial, and national professional collaborative activities. Qualifications: Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program for library and information science, or equivalent; degree in a subject area related to the responsibilities of this position; minimum 2 years of experience in an academic or research environment; demonstrated knowledge of political science, international affairs, public policy, law, and/or government information resources in all formats; general understanding of quantitative methods and research design; ability to work independently and effectively across organizational lines and in collaboration with colleagues to build strong relationships; strong commitment to diversity, equity, respect and inclusion; knowledge and understanding of emerging practices, standards, and trends in an academic or research library environment, including open access, data discovery and use, and digital scholarship. Preferred: Advanced degree or graduate level study in an applicable subject discipline; experience in collection development, research consultation and instruction in an academic or research library; reading knowledge of one or more foreign languages. Environment: The Social Sciences Library offers a range of collections, services and facilities to support teaching and research in the areas of African studies, African American studies, anthropology, criminology, political science, psychology, sociology, and women's and gender studies. In addition, the Library assists with the research needs for other programs such as demography, ecology, geography, human development and family studies, labor and employment relations, law, and public policy. Additional services include the Data Learning Center, which assists students and faculty with data discovery, geospatial analysis, and statistical analysis, and host two federal data research centers. Compensation and Benefits: Salary and rank are dependent upon qualifications and experience. Faculty may be asked to travel as official representatives of the Libraries to certain events and those trips are reimbursed at full cost within limits established by the University.
