EDUCATION ABROAD COORDINATOR

POSITION OVERVIEW

International Studies and Programs (ISP) at Michigan State University is seeking to fill an Education Abroad Coordinator position in the Office for Education Abroad. MSU has a high-volume, high-profile education abroad operation. The Office for Education Abroad has over 25 professional international educators who collectively support nearly 3,000 MSU education abroad participants each year. The coordinator will join an energetic team charged with managing the MSU education abroad programs portfolio, consisting of the associate director and six program coordinators.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The education abroad coordinator assumes primary responsibility for administering education abroad programs offered through one or more of MSU's colleges and other academic units. The education abroad coordinator is responsible for education abroad advising for majors from assigned colleges by becoming familiar with the education abroad programs offered in assigned colleges and the colleges' curricula and degree requirements.

Specifically, the Education Abroad Coordinator, under the direction of the associate director,

  • Serves in a liaison capacity to one or more MSU academic colleges (e.g., College of Natural Sciences), campus administrative units (e.g., Resource Center for Persons with Disability, Office of Financial Aid), International Studies and Programs units (e.g., GenCen, African Studies), and affiliated provider organizations (e.g., CIEE, IES)
  • Develops and manages education abroad programs
  • Provides comprehensive student advising and support
  • Provides leadership and coordination of one or more critical focus areas/functions within OSA (e.g., program evaluation, financial aid & scholarship advising and reporting, undergraduate research)

In particular this position is configured with a focus on undergraduate research abroad, international internships, and working with MSU's One Health initiative (a collaboration between the medical colleges, nursing and veterinary medicine).

The position will also be encouraged to contribute to the profession of education abroad, which may include attending regional, national and international conferences, and planning and implementing faculty and staff site visits. The position will be similarly encouraged to contribute to the field of education abroad, which may include producing scholarly publications, conducting outcomes assessment research, etc.

QUALIFICATIONS

MSU has a high-volume, high-profile education abroad operation. Candidates are expected to bring an ability to engage in strategic thinking, professional maturity and a proven ability to be self-directed and able to work independently in a complex matrix organization.

The successful candidate will have at a minimum a bachelor's degree in a related field such as international relations, foreign language, area studies, communication, higher education administration, etc.; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive professional work experience in an education abroad setting; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired qualifications include a master's degree in one of the fields noted above; experience living, working or studying abroad; demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills; and proficiency in a language other than English.
