The Director of Disability Services oversees a comprehensive program to support students with disabilities and ensure that they receive the services needed to facilitate their success and well being at the University of Mary Washington. The Director works closely with faculty and with all administrative offices to ensure that necessary accommodations are provided and that university processes and procedures support student success. The Director of Disability Services works to foster effective communication and collaboration across the university, to provide information and resources regarding disability issues, and to ensure the University’s compliance with requirements of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and other applicable laws or regulations.

This position will ensure that adequate and appropriate resources, services, supports, and training are provided to members of the University community.

Required Education:  

Advanced academic degree; Master’s degree required.

Required Experience:  

 

  • Substantial experience working in the field of disability services in a college or university setting;
  • Substantial experience in assessing documentation and requests for accommodations;
  • Demonstrated ability to work with teaching faculty and administrative personnel to provide inclusive learning environments;
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Universal Design and the social model of disability, legal requirements for compliance with ADA and other regulations;
  • Strong written and oral communication abilities.

Preferred Education:  

Ph.D. in an area appropriate for leadership in the area of disability.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience at the college level in classroom teaching or in academic advising/academic administration;
  • Expertise in new and emerging assistive technologies.
