FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

The Anthropology Department at John Jay College of Criminal Justice of the City University of New York (CUNY) seeks to make a tenure track appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in Social/Cultural Anthropology commencing in August 2018.

John Jay College is the college of justice at CUNY and has a long-standing reputation for excellence in matters related to criminal and social justice and deep connections to the national and local justice communities. Within this intellectual and political context, the Anthropology Department has two distinct majors: (1) Culture and Deviance Studies and (2) Anthropology, since 2013.

We seek a hire who can contribute to both majors and complement and augment our strengths in political and legal Anthropology, street ethnography, and the study of illicit drugs, urban inequality, deviance, sexuality, and the law. As a small department with twelve (12) full time and eighteen (18) sessional/adjunct faculty at a large public college with an emphasis on not only research, but on teaching as well, heavy preference will be given to those candidates with a demonstrated aptitude for teaching and learning in intellectually and demographically diverse environments.

Areas of interest for our department include, but are not limited to Antiracism, Critical Race Theory, Border Studies, Migration, Militarism, Marxism, Infrastructure, Political Economy, and the Law.  Geographic area open, but the department is committed to expanding its expertise beyond the United States.

Responsibilities include teaching, engaging and mentoring a very diverse student body at a large urban public college. The successful candidate will have the ability to deliver practical research training to students and a commitment to social inclusion and the advocacy for justice that is the core mission of John Jay College.

John Jay College of Criminal Justice, a senior college of the City University of New York (CUNY), is an internationally recognized leader in educating for justice, committed to the advancement of justice and just societies. It is a public liberal arts institution that enriches the learning experience by highlighting themes of justice across the arts, sciences, humanities, and social sciences. Located steps from Lincoln Center at the cultural heart of New York City, the College offers bachelors and masters degrees and participates in the doctoral programs of the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. Now under the leadership of its fifth President, former U.S. Assistant Attorney General, Karol V. Mason, the college has experienced unprecedented faculty hiring, an expansion of its curricular offerings, and the opening in 2011 of a new 600,000 square foot building with a black-box theater, state-of-the-art lab space, a moot court, and a variety of virtual learning settings.
