Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business seeks an accomplished professional with the vision, energy, and experience to provide leadership and guidance as the Associate Dean for Admissions to facilitate the successful recruitment and admissions of high-achieving and diverse students in all the school’s degree programs (Daytime MBA, Executive MBA, Master of Management Studies, and Master of Quantitative Management). The successful candidate will be collaborative, innovative, entrepreneurial, and comfortable using technology and data as tools to inform strategies and decisions.  The Associate Dean for Admissions will work closely with other Associate Deans, including the Senior Associate Dean for Full-Time Programs and the Senior Associate Dean for Executive MBA Programs, as well as with the Dean of the school.

The associate dean will motivate and empower the admissions team to deliver to Fuqua the students who best align with and further the mission of the School.  Success in matriculating those students involves working with our Marketing staff to create awareness and appropriate positioning of the Fuqua brand; creating and executing well designed, targeted, and coordinated recruiting efforts; providing a customer-focused approach to managing interactions with prospective students; and identifying and acting on factors that yield students within the implied constraints.

The associate dean is expected to create and foster an effective, efficient, and positive collaborative work environment. The essence of “Team Fuqua” should underlie the culture in the admissions area and help define interactions with prospective students, student and alumni volunteers, staff and faculty. The associate dean should possess superior presentation skills to articulate the “Why Fuqua” case – as well as the enthusiasm to inspire future students and other stakeholders.

The associate dean will be a key point of contact and will manage relationships with Fuqua constituents such as alumni, board members, donors, students, faculty, and staff. In addition, the associate dean connects through networks with professionals at other top business schools and supporting organizations such as GMAC. The associate dean will help define how those networks are best leveraged and represents the school both formally and informally in this capacity.

The associate dean will be a strategic, collaborative, and capable leader, motivated and inspired by the Fuqua vision and able to translate it to multiple audiences. S/he will be charged with invigorating and enhancing all of Fuqua’s admissions and recruiting programs and activities.  The associate dean will be a key contributor in the ongoing efforts to achieve the appropriate integration and alignment of resources, including staff within the department, and s/he will be expected to build partnerships within Fuqua and externally.

Reporting to the associate dean are several senior members of the staff—two assistant deans and two directors who help manage all aspects of admissions and recruiting across the portfolio of degree programs at Fuqua (full-time MBA programs, EMBA programs, MMS, and MQM). The division currently includes 31 FTE’s, in excess of 100 contract and student employees, and an operating budget of several million dollars. The Associate Dean for Admissions reports to the Senior Associate Dean for Full-Time Programs.

QUALITIES AND QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates should have a record of experience that aligns with the expectations of the role. Those expectations include a desire to lead and make others on the team and within Fuqua better in service to the school. Key personal attributes include an entrepreneurial drive, innovative mindset, strategic thinker, collaborative approach, and data driven mindset in extending our efforts to foster deeper relationships with potential students and key partners in the admissions realm.

Expected experience includes senior-level work demonstrating the ability to be successful in the Associate Dean role at Fuqua. While admissions experience in higher education will be considered favorably, industry experience in marketing, consulting, and leading teams with a data-driven and customer-focused approach are valued as well.

An MBA or another advanced degree is required.
