Graduate STEM Writing Lecturer
NYU Abu Dhabi

In keeping with its goal of encouraging excellence in writing across the university, NYUAD seeks to appoint a Graduate & Postdoctoral Writing professional that will specifically support PhD students in a broad range of technical fields. The position will support writers who work with and write about data, including scientists, engineers, and quantitatively-oriented social scientists. The position will aim to distinguish scientific writing for PhD theses and journal publications, with the goal of giving constituents the tools to write succinctly about quantitative results, provide clear representations of data, and communicate effectively with the public.

Position responsibilities:

  • Teaches several short duration courses, such as dissertation boot-camps and journal submission seminars, to advanced graduate students and postdoctoral writers
  • Develops curricula and assesses participants to improve skill levels
  • Organizes and delivers workshops, seminars, boot-camps, and other events for an international population of graduate students
  • Offers one-on-one consultations, usually for a set number of hours per week
  • May train and supervise “peer tutors” – other postdocs would provide potential to increase the scope of graduate-level support
  • Performs related administrative duties for the GPPO and plans the build-out of graduate writing support services, including building a program of Writing in Science and Engineering Postdoctoral Fellowships (recordkeeping, event planning, outreach, coordination with faculty and other university areas, etc.)
  • Consultations with faculty on incorporating writing into science and engineering graduate classes as masters programs are developed at NYUAD

Position requirements:

  • PhD in STEM field (or in Composition/Rhetoric complemented by a STEM background) strongly preferred; master’s required.
  • The ideal candidate will have experience as a working scientist and/or significant experience with scientific writing, including lab reports, research articles, and grant proposals.
  • At least 2-3 years of relevant instructional experience at the university level.
  • Publication record and/or high-quality writing samples.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects/tasks with limited supervision.
  • Ability to design graduate courses in technical and scientific writing, and in STEM communication.
  • Experience working with non-native English speakers would be an asset.
  • Data visualization expertise for publications, presentations, and posters would be an advantage.

To apply for this position, please submit a cover letter, CV, a STEM related writing sample and two referees via the online application system.
