Departmental Overview

The purpose of this position is to perform repetitive basic laboratory procedures such as to assist in tissue processing, assisting in behavioral procedures with animals and general lab duties. The procedures are mostly repetitive and involve standardized procedures and protocols. However, these procedures are time consuming and are essential to the overall goal of the laboratory, which is to define and map the neural circuit basis of behavior in health and disease.

Responsibilities

85% Performing standard repetitive procedures such as perfusion, maintaining experimental equipment, assisting in managing bat colony, stereotaxic aseptic surgery, perfusion, routine preparatory work for various procedures (such as making solution or reagents, autoclaving), record keeping, tissue cutting and staining.

15% Cleaning experimental spaces, weighing animals, and assisting with animal husbandry.

Required Qualifications

***********************THIS IS A THREE-YEAR CONTRACT POSITION*************************

*Previous experience with: Perfusions, tissue processing (cutting, mounting, immunohistochemistry).
*Comfortable with animal handling, stereotaxic and aseptic surgical techniques
*Takes good notes and organizes data/documentation of experiments.
*Excellent communication skills, works well independently.
*Bachelor degree in molecular and cell biology or related field and 2+ years experience working with animals and standard repetitive processing of tissue in a research laboratory.

Preferred Qualifications

*Audio/video recording, familiar with computer programming or Matlab, data and server management, experience managing behavioral experiments with animals.
*A minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience (e.g. with small animal surgery).

• The hourly salary range designated for this position: $20.74.
• This is a three-year contract position. Contract positions may be extended based on operational demand. Contract positions are eligible to participate in the health and welfare programs offered by UC Berkeley.
