Campus Life and Inclusive Excellence (CLIE) is the student affairs division of the University of Denver. CLIE includes Housing and Residential Education, Academic Resources, Student Community Engagement, Health and Counseling, and the Center for Multicultural Excellence. Student Activities and Leadership is responsible for support of a variety of student focused co-curricular activities for both undergraduate and graduate students on the University of Denver campus. The goal of the department is to assist students in engaging in activities that will help them exercise and develop their skills associated with their passions outside the classroom.

 

Position Summary

The Director is responsible for implementing the vision of an inclusive and engaging student community commons through programming and innovative student leadership development. The Director manages professional staff serving Fraternity and Sorority Life, student organizations, student government, and programming & activities for both graduate and undergraduate students. The Director is responsible for oversight of the Driscoll Student Center as a programming tool within the division and its overall management. All programs and initiatives led by the Director must demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and a demonstrated commitment to cross departmental and divisional collaboration. The Director reports directly to the Executive Director of Student Engagement.

 

Essential Functions

Leadership, Vision, and Strategic Directions:

  • Provide area leadership to ensure efficiency and programmatic excellence within the Driscoll Student Center and coordination with other University facilities as needed.
  • Engage in the establishment of a strategic vision and annual implementation plan for the department.
  • Hire, train and supervise professional staff and ensure ongoing professional development of those staff to support their ability to be high performers.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to the principles of diversity, equity and inclusion through practical application within departmental practices and policies.
  • Represent the department at divisional and University meetings with a commitment to maintaining the student voice and focus on student well-being in decisions impacting students.

Student Leadership Development:

  • Lead student organization and student government skill development for both undergraduate and graduate students to ensure involved students gain the necessary leadership skills to effectively impact students and to take with them after they leave DU.
  • Provide oversight for the development and implementation of common training principles for student leaders across the Division of Campus Life and Inclusive Excellence (e.g. Fraternity and Sorority Life, DU Programming Board, RAs, Front Desk Staff, Orientation Leaders, Undergraduate and Graduate Student Governments, Joint Council, etc.). This includes developing a strategy to improve the programming support across the division, through innovative policies, practices, and meaningful roles for the numerous student employees in the Driscoll Student Center.
  • Oversight of student organization rights and responsibilities.

Inclusive Community Wide Programming:

  • Lead division-wide programming board (CLIE Programming Board) to ensure collaboration and unified structure for all student activities and programs.
  • Lead staff team to develop and implement commuter student events and community building and engaging programming.
  • Lead staff team to develop and implement graduate student events and community building and engaging programming.
  • Lead staff in developing and implementing innovative, engaging late night and weekend programming to encourage the development of a vibrant student community on campus.
  • Lead the development and implementation of meaningful and inspiring student traditions and rituals which includes annual signature programs that anchor student engagement on campus. Such traditions must include graduate students and reflect the diverse identities of our entire community.

Programming Operations Management:

  • Supervise the day-to-day functions of the Driscoll Student Center including, event management, student personnel administration, and fiscal operations including the USG Student Comptroller.
  • Supervise students and appointed staff members.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to design programming that will cultivate a strong sense of community for a rapidly diversifying student body.
  • Have a strong understanding of student development theories, specifically the relationship between student's social identities as they relate to programming goals and learning outcomes.
  • Have a strong understanding of the relationship between the built-environment and student experience.
  • Familiarity with utilizing emerging technologies, software, and applications to promote and enrich student activities, organizations and clubs, and student engagement overall.

 

Required Qualifications 

  • Master’s Degree in Higher Education.
  • 3+ years of experience in supervising full-time professional staff while in a full-time profession role.
  • 3+ years, post bachelor’s degree, full-time professional experience within student affairs/multicultural student affairs in a post-secondary institution.
  • Demonstrated experience in planning and programming.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion and equity efforts embedded into the foundation of all programming and initiatives.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends and holidays as needed to support student/departmental events.
  • Experience integrating Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic with Multicultural Greek and National PanHellenic Council.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in supervising full-time professional staff while in a full-time profession role.
  • 5+ years, post bachelors degree, full-time professional experience within student affairs/multicultural student affairs in a post-secondary institution.
  • Experience with designing innovative assessment tools to evaluate the impact of student engagement initiatives.
  • Experience with streamlining complex processes, iterative thinking, and lean organizational designs.

 

Work Schedule 

Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. with some evenings and holidays.
