The search committee for Dr. Hudson's replacement is currently seeking applications and nominations for the Institute's next Director. As one of Penn State's five major cross-cutting interdisciplinary institutes, the Huck has advanced interdisciplinary excellence in the life sciences and a University-wide culture of facilitating collaborative research. The new Director will help build on this tradition of excellence and guide Penn State's life sciences to the next level by working with Deans and Directors to help achieve the University's strategic priorities, including the launch of a major new biomedical research initiative. With an annual budget of $14M, the Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences' mission is to catalyze excellence in interdisciplinary life sciences at Penn State. The Huck is comprised of five Institutes including Genomics, Plant Sciences, Ecology, Infectious Disease, Neurosciences and 18 Centers of excellence, and engages faculty across each of Penn State's colleges, including the College of Medicine at Hershey. The Institutes and Centers act as a focus of research and teaching across life science disciplines and are dedicated to solving some of society's greatest challenges by building alliances across disciplinary boundaries, enhancing Penn State's ability to prepare students for the challenges of the future, and developing innovative approaches to effective translation of its discoveries. The Huck Institutes has a portfolio of 110 co-funded faculty and oversees 6 intercollege graduate degree programs comprised of 275 graduate students. The Huck Institutes support research through ten state-of-the-art shared technology facilities including genomics, high field magnetic resonance imaging, metabolomics, proteomics and mass spectrometry, microscopy, flow cytometry, fermentation, transgenic mouse, x-ray crystallography, and cryo-electron microscopy. With a dedicated staff of over 40 support professionals, the Huck manages 80,000 sq ft of state-of-the-art laboratory space in 5 buildings including space in the award winning Millenium Science Complex that brings together researchers in the life, biomedical, and material sciences. The Director of the Huck Institutes reports directly to the Vice President for Research, who oversees research activity exceeding $830 million annually. The responsibilities of the Director include: (1) providing vision, university-wide leadership, and catalysis of excellence in research and education at the interface between life science disciplines; (2) building bridges and collaborations among the core colleges and developing policies and incentives for faculty participation, to create an atmosphere of inclusion of diverse expertise and perspectives; (3) chairing the faculty steering committee that advises on all activities, policies and programs for the Huck Institutes; (4) chairing the Deans Advisory Committee, which gives advice to the Huck Director on operational, financial, and space matters; (5) identifying new funding opportunities and coordinating interdisciplinary research programs; (6) enhancing graduate education in the life sciences, including support through fellowships, assistantships, joint recruiting, professional development and mentoring; (7) identifying the means to facilitate research through seminars, workshops, and symposia; and (8) serving as liaison between the University's life sciences programs and state, national, and international life sciences organizations. The successful candidate will be recognized as an international leader in the biomedical or life sciences in terms of scientific accomplishments and vision; possess leadership skills necessary to develop new initiatives and advance ongoing programs in research, teaching, and outreach in the life sciences; and have an appreciation for the academic environment and our land grant mission. Candidates must have credentials appropriate for a tenured professor in an appropriate college. Review of applications will begin on July 1, 2017, and continue until the position is filled.
