Position Summary

General Responsibilities:

The faculty member shall be responsible for the following: coordination of instructional programs and/or teaching assigned classes under the supervision of the area dean; helping students fulfill their maximum potential in mastering course content; assessing student learning outcomes; maintaining a thorough and up-to-date knowledge in his/her regular teaching field; continuing professional development; utilizing current technology in the performance of job duties; maintaining standards of professional conduct and ethics appropriate to the professional position; assisting with articulation and curriculum development and review; serving on college committees and participating in faculty governance including accreditation and student co-curricular activities; assuming other responsibilities as assigned by the area dean; fulfilling other duties and responsibilities of a full-time faculty member as outlined in the college faculty handbook.

Assignment may include instructing classes, which could result in an Instructional/Coordinator split assignment.

Under the general supervision of the Dean of Distance Education, Virtual Education Center, the Universal Design for Learning Coordinator works in collaboration with faculty in identifying barriers to student success and suggesting solutions that address the needs of the college’s diverse teaching and learning community. The Coordinator will provide expertise in best practices for creating culturally responsive and equitable learning environments for all courses and programs offered at the college.

Utilizing the Universal Design Framework for Learning (UDL) framework, the Coordinator guides faculty in developing flexible approaches to teaching and learning. The UDL framework encompasses creating resources and assessments, and delivering content that supports, respects, and celebrates the individual preferences and differences of students.

Additionally, the Coordinator supports faculty as they develop and deliver high-quality courses that promote student success while conforming to existing regulations. This includes addressing accessibility barriers for all courses offered at the college, including online, web-enhanced, and face-to-face courses.

Assignment Responsibilities

The instructional assignment may include, but is not limited to:

● Assisting faculty in developing variety and flexibility within course design and teaching practices that foster culturally responsive learning experiences and addresses multiple diversities. 

● Providing instructional design support in the use of UDL techniques to ensure culturally responsive and accessible course design.

● Providing instructional design support to ensure online courses align with established online course design standards.

● Designing, developing, and providing educational opportunities for faculty in the use of UDL, culturally responsive course design, and accessibility techniques.

● Assisting faculty in the review of online course content for the compliance of federal laws and alignment with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 (WCAG) standards, and providing guidance and development to faculty to bring courses into compliance. 

● Assisting faculty in the review of online course content to meet online course design standards and providing guidance and development to faculty to bring courses into alignment with the standards. 

● Reviewing and validating third-party Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPATs) used for online instruction.

● Assisting with the collection and analysis of data for online learning assessment.

● Staying abreast of emerging technologies and best practices for UDL techniques, accessibility of online course content, and laws and regulations. 

● Serving as the main point of contact for the college’s Web Accessibility Plan. 

● Communicating effectively with beginning and experienced technology users.

● Collaborating with students, faculty, and staff. 

● Performing other duties as assigned.

Instructional assignment may include day, evening, online, television courses, podcasts, hybrid, weekend, and/or off campus classes.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Have a master’s degree from an accredited institution, completed by August 10, 2017, in Instructional Design/Technology, Educational Technology, Education, Curriculum and Instruction, or in a discipline taught at the college; OR, hold a California Community College Instructor’s Credential in the discipline area; OR, the equivalent.*

2. Have sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including those with physical or learning disabilities as it relates to differences in learning styles.
